Distills digital connectivity and analog warmth into a phenomenal preamp with glowing performance. |
The 2-channel ART DMPA Pro Mic Pre with Digital Outs is one of the finest microphone preamps with digital capability available. The enhanced discrete front end maintains every nuance, revealing incredible dynamic range.
Variable Input Impedance optimizes the ART DMPA for performance with a wide range of microphones. This infinitely adjustable variation dramatically alters the performance of the microphone and creates more sonic possibilities.
The selectable Tube Plate Voltage function delivers a wide variety of tones. The tube circuit is differential and provides the equivalent of a 300V power supply on the high voltage setting. With very low self-noise, the normal setting maintains classic tube preamp sounds.
The MPA Gold's unique tube circuitry utilizes 2 - 12AX7A vacuum tubes and renders unsurpassed detail and clarity with a broad range of mics. The ART DMPA Pro provides gain with controlled overload while maintaining the dynamic range of the previous stage.
In addition to the large VU meters, the MPA Gold has Tube Warmth LED metering which measures the left and right audio channel levels. Average level attack and release are measured in milliseconds and the peak function has a 20 microsecond attack time. The analog meter range is switchable between -10dB and +4dBU. The high pass filter is continuously variable from 15Hz-150Hz.
Both analog and digital outputs allow you to take advantage of the DMPA's preamp power with the widest range of formats, including AES/EBU, S/PDIF. TOSLINK, and ADAT interfaces. The Digital MPA provides 24-bit processing and can adapt to 16-bit applications with the push of a button. The A/D is front panel adjustable from 44.1 to 192k. Syncs to ADAT and external word clock (32kHz-100kHz).

Good all around product

I've owned this unit for six months. Generally, I use this unit to provide digital out to my MBOX SPIDF input for recording. But it's also my primary pre-amp ... sending output to a main and bass amp. My only complaint with the unit are the two 12AX7 tubes provided. After determining that my Strat sounded relatively flat, I decided to invest in a couple of high-end vintage tubes ($100 for two on eBay). What a difference! I've got twin humbuckers on my American Strat and that 5-way select switch actually does deliver noticeably different tone output. Moreover, the buzz in both my amps and monitors noticeably decreased. (The installation of the tubes is straightforward ... just remove the cover and the rest is obvious.)

I purchased the MPA gold about three months ago and I absolutely love it!! I record a lot of hip hop and r&b vocals and this thing really makes a difference. It makes my Rode K2 sound lovely! I have a couple of low end mics that sound great also with the MPA gold! Great Product that could compete with a lot of higher end mic- pres, beleive me!!

I have worked with quite a few pre amps and own a firepod (it does the job well) and a blue tube (which I really don't like). I record on the DMPA with an SM57 and a blue bluebird (pan left and right) on my mesa boogie triple rec and it sounds fantastic. Very little eq needed. The DMPA is killer on vocals. I love the variable impedence along with the plate voltage switch when working with different vocalists. Drums overheads are really good throught this unit. It performs excellent with all of the above situations I mentioned. For under $500 dollars this is totally the way to go. I wouldn't be suprised if it out performed more expensive units.

I love this preamp. Brilliant for vocals, great for overheads, punchy for the bass...
You can use the MPA for so many recording situations. And it always sounds great. If warm or clear, if crunchy or distorted.

I wanted a tube pre that didn't sound dull, fuzzy, or noisy. I own the Focusright Octopre (FO) and I love it. The FO is a little noisy, but it is great for giving a spacous sound. However, the Art is also spacous, and it is cleaner, warmer and brighter (yes, warm and bright can go together). I don't like that you can't seem to monitor the input level, but with 70db of headroom, you really don't need to. If you clip, it will sound nice with the natural tube compression. It is a transistor unit, not transformer, but it really displays a sudo transformer sound, and it is cleaner, God is it clean. It is punchy when you turn off the tube, but it is crisp, spongy (compression) and sparkly with you blend in the tube. This unit is great for acoustic instruments, espically vocals. The digital section is well thought out and worked flawless. The variable impeadence is great! This feature mad all of my mics sound clearer than ever before. Although I have not posted any of the recordings that I completed with this unit, yet. P.S. I am not employed by or affiliated with any company that makes money from the sales of geer. I am just a recording engineer that was very happy with the Art DMPA.
