This unit has everything you need for a pro quality tube recording channel. It also works well for live applications for vocals. The compressor is very smooth and the gain it can push is insane. For a heavily driven guitar its wonderful. The EQ is subtle and tight. Just what you want. The tube compression and optical offer a huge array of pretty much anything you want. I will have to say that I would strongly recommend pulling the tubes out and replacing them with quality 12AX7's. The ones it has a cheap chinese ones and the sound improves so much when you change them. Get this unit then order up some tubes from Musicians Friend and you are golden. Art products are very underrated and for anyone who has not tried them, give em a shot. Art does not disappoint.

I own 2 units and i cannot say anything bad about it. Transparent, silky, warm, tons of gain and certainly the best tube channel strip in it's price range. If you are thinking about something else around the same price, forget it. This will knock the socks off of anything else PERIOD. I use this in the studio from vox to gtr to bass to anything else I need to. I use this when I mix live on lead vox and bass and bypass the console channel altogether(I have 2 units). Or I strap it inline on the stereo buss for beautiful results even on large format consoles and especially on digital consoles. I used the VLA before I bought these and that triggered my purchase decision for the whole TUBE CHANNEL. You will not regret purchasing this unit. In reality you should buy 2 for your stereo trks. I've been using this for gigging on my bass rig.... crown 402 and been very happy. I'm starting to play more guitar and dont like hauling the vintage stuff around. I'll tell you it wakes up your tone in front of a bassman or musicman but still looking for the right pedals as I said now using it with crown amp....the vocal channel rocks and gives you more tonal flex that you can imagine.

I've had this preamp for over a year now. Very flexible, used it mostly on Vocals and some Bass DI & Mic'd acoustic.. I change the stock tubes to 2 Mullards 12AT7 and Tung-sol 12AX7 couple of months ago and Wow!!!! more life and warm'd sound.. Can't get any Tube Pre this flexible for the price range.. Buy it!!!!

I've owned one of these for about 2 years now and I have used it for two things, a recording chanel in my home studio, and as my preamp in my gigging bass rig. It works amazingly well in both of these arenas. The compression is great and the tone is very flexable. The gain levels are very good as well.
