The ART TPS II 2-Channel Variable Impedance Tube Preamp is coupled with ART's proprietary V3 (Variable Valve Voicing) functionality to deliver tremendous versatility. It features variable input impedance which allows users to dial in and match any microphone type from large condensers to ribbon mics.

Like its predecessor, the DPS, the newly improved V3 feature provides optimized reference points to begin the recording process for guitars, bass guitars, synths, acoustic instruments, percussion, vocals, and more. Unique to its class, the TPS II provides level monitoring with 2 analog meters as well as 2 newly added input monitoring LED meters. High-Z instruments or balanced microphone signals are input through front and rear panel jacks.

This newly enhanced TPS II can accept +20dB peaks while maintaining over 120dB dynamic range, quiet performance, and incredibly low distortion.

ART's legendary tube stage delivers classic warm sound and adds additional tube voicing specifically tailored to vocal, guitar, bass, and acoustic instruments, making it an incredible DI box. OPL (Output Protection Limiting) controls overshoots and normalizes levels before clipping occurs.

The TPS II was conceived, designed, and manufactured to the highest standards to provide years of quiet, reliable performance. Audition one and you too will know why the TPS II is among the most cost-effective professional mic preamp system you'll find on the market today.

I do like the old duel tube MP that they don't make anymore (these didn't have the 'variable voicing' or any limiter) but these are also wonderful.

As noted by others, some of the units have glitches....on one of mine the lights for the VU meters went out. But that's the only problem I've ever had.

The sound is brilliant (once you replace the cheap ones they use with something a little nicer), and you can use it for anything. I can honestly say they are the best (lower end) pre-amps for microphones of any sort. I use it live on stage in my bass rig to warm up the sound...and they are great DI boxes for keys, bass, or guitar. I even use it for multitrack-to-stereo mixdowns, to warm up dry digital mixes.

The presets take the headache of spending too much time making settings. Just turn the dial to the appropriate instrument and go. With all instruments recorded in this manner, they all "mesh" in the final mixdown, providing a more pleasant listening experience, i.e., easy on the ears (even at loud volumes). My Ruby Tubes added the extra richness and warmth that the stock tubes did not produce.

Decent Pre amp

If you have some electronics experience, this unit would work for you. However, don't expect miracles, it does what it claims and its OK. Its quiet and gets good gain, with some warmth. But to improve the sound out of the pre amp, you should change out the tube, to a USA or Russian made tube. The chinese tube that comes with it is average sounding, at best. Get a GT, Sylvannia or GE tube and the sound is night and day. I use it in live sound and studio on vocals, Bass and acoustic guitar.

Don't Waste Your Money

I am a pro musician and studio engineer/producer. Because of fiscal constraints I bought this rig thinking that I could save some dough and have a decent preamp. Quality was just run of the mill at first. I did like the presets for various instruments. But the sound was nothing special. Like one of the previous reviewers, after a year the back lights for the LED meters went out followed by one of the channels ceasing to work. I would not recommend this, even in the name of saving a few bucks. I would have had to upgrade eventually anyway, so why not just bite the bullet and get what you want up front. I guess the old adage is true: "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!"

I've been using my Art preamps (2 for 4 channels!) for 2 1/2 years now, and I have ZERO complaints. I have gotten many, many compliments on my recording tone from drums, to guitars, and vocals. I use these preamps for everything! I've even been "accused" of using analog equipment, and not the Tascam 2488 that I DO use. Some have even compared my recording "tones" to that of early Sabbath albums.

If you have a few bucks and are looking for a decent quality preamp for a relatively cheap cost, these are the puppies to get....
