This preamp has some cool features and and certainly adds some warmth. I bought a pair for recording and planned to use them on kick and snare to boost the signal. I was able to do that but the units were both noisy and ultimately I returned them both. They're OK for what they are but the noise was the clincher. Some other reviews mentioned fixes and so on but I just wanted them to work out of the box and they didn't and I didn't have time to mess around.

I got one of these things and was completely impressed. The OPL gives me tube warmth compression that you can only get from much more expensive gear.
The thing is built solid and looks completely cool,too... The Chinese 12AX7A sounded fine to me, but I got a Tesla just for fun, Then a couple of friends started giving me NOS tubes from thier collections. Long story short, IMHO,If a tube change makes a difference, it's a small one. YMMV
I use it with an MXL 4000 condenser (the phantom power is a nice touch)into a a small board into a BR-600. It is completely silent, unless you use the +20db gain switch. I'll use the second one as a DI for guitar. Bottom line... At the price you cannot go wrong.

I originally bought one of these for the phantom power. It took a while for it to arrive but it worked great. I was surprised at what this did with my tone. I did not honestly expect much, but after playing with it a little bit I realized I could tell a difference. I plugged my guitar into it and was shocked at how it warmed up the signal. I bought a second one that I now have on my peddle board. If you are looking for the best tube preamp this may not be what you are looking for, but for the money you cannot go wrong. Don't expect a $700.00 tube preamp here...but this is not bad for the buck. Get two ... I have checked out some preamps at more than twice this price that don't sound any better and have a reputation for quitting... Understand I have one in my studio, no big deal, But the other one is dragged everywhere. I am an active musician that plays gigs every week. Try it! You have nothing to lose.

Just bought my 2nd one of these & have always been happy with it. Put a Tung-Sol tube in the first unit & it warmed up even more, will do the same with my new unit soon. I have used this unit to record into mt DP-02 I have used it for live vocals, acoustic guitar, bass some keyboards.. Worked great in every situation. Everyone with me can tell the difference. We are professional musicians.
My next purchase will be 2 of the "Project MP" series. I rented two of these units for a big live gig To run in front of the DP-02. Needed the two "Studio MP's". for the board. the project series worked awesome for the DP-02. Nuff said!

I bought one of these to use as a preamp in front of my vocals for recording. I received it and within about an hour it completely stopped working. I received my new one and have had no problems since.
I have used it for everthing that I can from guitars to vox to percussion. It's very easy to use and pretty sturdy. I've left it on for hours, played live with it in front of my vocals, etc. and had no problems. The tube sounds a bit plastic, kind of synthetic, but its still an improvement on any direct signal and can also add a bit of charachter to a solid state amp or a standard PA. I plan on switching the tube out with a more high end one as soon as the warranty runs out. I think if you buy this product for what its for, warming up your signal a bit, you won't be disappointed. If you are buying it for tone or to take the place of a tube amp, you'll be let down. It adds a nice bit of warmth to direct signals, can give your sound umph, and can also crank up some dirt when needed, but its not going to do what the preamp section on my tube amp will do. I've used it in front of vocals in a live setting, crank up the gain, and you have a nice, clear vocal with some grit and dirt. Its a great little box for the money, but it isn't something that is going to make or break you.
