The ART USB Dual Pre is ideal for laptop-based audio production. It's powered by an internal 9-volt battery, your computer's USB bus, or an optional 12-volt DC adapter. The rugged aluminum chassis with rubber sides handles road abuse.

The ART USB Dual Pre has two low-noise input channels with XLR balanced and 1/4" TRS inputs, each with up to 48dB of clean gain and clip LED indicators. With it's low noise 48-volt phantom power supply you can power up to two mics as well as the preamp when running off any of the power sources. The 1/4" outputs are buffered and low impedance balanced for use as either preamplifier outputs or feeds for powered monitors. A rear 1/8" TRS mini headphone jack with level and monitor controls provides latency-free monitoring of inputs during recording or the USB bus during playback. Fully compliant with the USB 1.1 specification, this compact device uses USB adaptive mode for playback and USB asynchronous mode for recording.

Very nice, but 16-bit only recording

I am a beginner, and this thing being both a preamp and a digital audio interface, serves my purposes very well. However, what you don't see in the spec sheet is this unit's recording bit depth, which turned out to be only 16 bit, which is why I rated its feature set with only 4 stars. If 16-bit only capability was spelled out in the specs, there would be no grounds for this little disappointment. Other audio interfaces in the same price range do have 24-bit capability. Otherwise, this unit is great and does what it's supposed to on budget.

It Just Works!

I've been looking for a good portable preamp and usb interface for my laptop, looking to do some recording of an amateur choir. I've tried a few others and had to return them because the driver software conflicted with my Vista Home Premium 64bit OS. Other companies promised me that Vista drivers would be ready shortly. My email to ART was answered with the simple claim that this box works with built-in USB codecs, standard to all Windows OS's. I decided that for such a low price, I could afford to try it out.

I plugged it in and Vista automatically recognized it and *ding*, it's my sound card. I play some audio files, no problems. No interference or drop-outs. Intrigued, I moved on to playing back sequences from FL Studio and Sibelius. Again, none of the audio errors that made me return the last box I tried, even with some pretty low latency settings. I hook up some mics and, wonder of wonders, after I set the right bit rate, Audacity records just fine.

It seems the simple solution is the best solution when it comes to USB interfaces.

I can run two phantom power mics off this box with just the USB power, making my setup extremely mobile. I can fit the box in my hand and it has a solid metal case so I'm not afraid to throw it in my bag.

It's not all perfect. Controls are very crowded and some of the silkscreened labels are in purple, making them invisible against the black metal in low light, but thinking about aesthetics was what made me buy one of the bad boxes I had to return.

I'm amazed at how little they're asking for a piece of equipment that does all this stuff, and does it right out of the package.
