This pair of Alesis M1 Active 520 Near-Field Reference Monitors offers incredible definition and flat frequency response with the help of high-precision drivers and a carefully designed crossover. The rear-port provides deep bass-extension and high SPL output, and the rear-mounted EQ switches allow the user to tailor the speaker to the studio environment. A 1"-thick front baffle minimizes speaker resonance and the acoustic waveguide evenly disperses high-frequency sound. The Bass Density control lets you dial in balanced sound regardless of room or placement. The Alesis M1 520 monitor's top-mounted power/clip indicator lets you know if the speaker is clipping.

I bought these thinkin that they would be fine. Nothing special cuz I jus hated the monitors I had before. When I got them last night man..... it blew my mind. I thought it took a lot of money to get quality like this. I'm gonna cop a pair of the more powerful set too. These are hot

The rating I gave these speakers may seem weird to you, as will this review.

The speakers, in general, are fine. The blue light changes to red when the speaker clips, which is nice... however these speakers cannot handle a very high SPL.

What is odd about this speaker is that I am TOTALLY UNABLE TO MIX with them. Everything I do to the mix sounds good. Why is this a problem? Because when I burn a CD and take it to my car, the mix is utter crap. Utter Crap. So I go back, and I listen to the CD through these speakers and it sounds fine. Ok... So I started writing down adjustments in my car that I needed to make. I make them and the mix sounds better, but it's guess work. You don't get an accurate image with these at all. I have no idea why. I just can't mix with them.

Fair warning.

Not a very good set of monitors. It has a high pitched tone when it is on that can be very irritating. Also the power lights dim when the speaker is working at half volume suggesting that it is loading the supply.

Alesis tech support says these are not issues and is perfectly normal for this monitor - go figure. Guess they set their product expectations quite low...

hit the mark and exceeded my expectations

My home studio needed some quality monitors, but nothing as big and bulky as an 8" Goliath. So I headed on over to the local music store to take a listen to some smaller options. These Alesis speakers hit the mark and exceeded my expectations.

Here's what I love about them: after mixing a couple tracks at home and comparing them to tracks done in my commercial studio, I was stunned. The home studio mix was three times better! Unbelievable, I know. But it's the truth. The bass was tighter despite these monitors only having a 5" driveer. And the highs aren't all hyped up like some of the more popular monitors on the market.

The best part is the selectable bass control on the back. I needed it because I mix in the corner of a room. The option to roll the lows off and control them more precisely was just what I needed. That option alone makes these the perfect choice for any home studio. Go try them yourself. You won't be let down.
