A compact, affordable analog mixer with FireWire. |
The dual-purpose Alesis MultiMix 8 FireWire 8-Channel Analog Mixer is a FireWire interface with real faders, knobs, and EQ. The MultiMix 8 is also a rockin' standalone analog mixer with quality Alesis effects and flexible signal routing. Each input channel on the mixer (plus the stereo mix) is sent into your computer and a stereo output is received from the computer for monitoring. The versatility of the Alesis Multimix 8 will fit your needs in your project studio, for live sound, portable recording with a laptop, sub mixing, and radio/TV production.
You get preamps with XLR and 1/4" balanced ins and phantom power on mono channels; balanced 1/4" ins, aux send, and stereo aux return on stereo channels; 28-bit effects; 3-band EQ on each channel; 1/4" balanced main and monitor outs; a headphone jack; and 24-bit, 44.1/48kHz A/D/A conversion. Steinberg Cubase LE is included.
From studio to stage
The MultiMix FireWire lets you record your band during the day and mix your live gig at night. Every input plus the stereo mix is sent to the computer while a stereo pair returns from the computer into the MultiMix for monitoring (and headphone mixes).
24-bit, 44.1/48kHz operation
The MultiMix 8 uses the same A/D and D/A conversion as the esteemed Alesis HD24 recorder for clean, pure, and totally professional conversion.
Next-generation FireWire technology
Alesis MultiMix 8 uses the brand new, high-performance TC Applied Technologies Dice II FireWire chip. Tha means superior clocking, state-of-the-art interfacing, and robust drivers all come standard!
Alesis effects built in
The MultiMix FireWire has 100 of Alesis' 28-bit digital effects built in. Reverbs, choruses, delays, and other effects can be mixed into your recording path or just used for zero-latency headphone mixes (the performer hears reverb in the headphones, but the track is recorded dry into the computer).
Rack it up
Alesis makes the MultiMix 8 rackmountable, with easy-to-attach rack ears available.

Can't live without it

I knew I needed a transitional mixer: This little mixer answers in spades. The cool thing is the seamless FireWire integration. Astoundingly flexible. This little guy fits in a briefcase and gets more work done every week than my other mixers combined. I use it most for 2 things: practice mixer for 4 vocals for a couple of bands, or as a portable audio-for-video on-sight production mixer, allowing me to send a reference mix to the camera, yet record 4 separate audio tracks directly into my computer for later processing.

I've had this unit as the main mixer in my home studio for several years without a hitch. I've upgraded to windows sp3 without any problems. The drivers are a little tricky to get right, and you must tweak your control panel settings to find the best setup-but after that-it has worked flawlessly every time. Has all the features you could ask for in DAW recording and I find it very quiet and clean for anything from acoustic guitar to massive VST sounds. When purchased on discount less than street price, this has been a very good deal for me

Does What I Bought it For

Bought one three years ago for the ability to individually record eight tracks. Cubase LE only supports four tracks, so I bought SE. Have had only learning problems, mine works great. It is sensitive to the order in which things are turned on. I go computer first, then mixer, then Cubase. I am impressed with the sound I can get on playback. Liked it enough to buy the Firewire 16.

Features: 4.5. I bought this board because it lets me send all 8 channels independently to my DAW, which is nice, because when I mic a drum set, I can give each channel it's own EQ. I doubt I'll ever use it live (my yamaha 16 channel board is better for that). The mic preamps are extraordinarily clean. I found they do not color the sound at all, which you'll either love or hate. Awesome for instruments, but my miss my behringer xenyx preamps for vocals. I'll just have to get a dedicated preamp for vocals. Quality: It feels cheap. The knobs spin very easily, and wobble a bit. The output seems a little quiet to me, but that's fixable by turning the volume up louder. The board itself has been pretty quiet so far. I've heard horror stories about these dying after a month, which doesn't surprise me based on how it feels. I bought an extended warranty, just in case. Value: I got this on clearance at a local music store at 35% off. I don't know if I would have bought it if the price wasn't so low, but it has all the features I wanted to add to my DAW. Hopefully it holds up.

This little piece of trash failed about 1 month after plugging it in. Alesis Tech Support is simply AWFUL! You pay to ship it a third party repair house, so now I've spent even more in order to "save money". As for drivers, Alesis currently does not support Vista or XP SP3 officially, but they will be more than happy to have you rebuild your whole system using windows XP SP2 before they agree to accept the product back in for repair. The whole experience made me feel like a goof for replacing my failed 12R standard mixer with this. Certainly learned my lesson about buying Alesis products ever again.
