pretty excited, but pretty disappointed.

First off, I should say that I had high expectations that were probably unreasonable for an ipod recorder for this price, but I really like the concept of this. The first disappointment was that the built in mics were practically inaudible with the gain set to where there wasn't noticable hissing noise, or so noisy with sufficent gain as to be almost useless. It did sound better with a phantom powered condenser(shure ksm27), but that was kinda defeating the camping portabilty goals I had. Once you've got a mic, a cord, a stand, and headphones etc, you may as well have a laptop and a buspowered small interface. Another goal I had for this was to use it as a scratch vocal tool, i.e. sending some instrumental music into one input from another ipod or whatever, and a mic into the other. No panning makes track isolation impossible. The gain controls have no feel, no indents, and probably a 3 degree window which is usable. Matching them is difficult. I got this for the extra inputs, and phantom power, but lugging around all that gear to capture decent at best audio seems pointless now. I'd recommend trying the blue mikey cuz its cheaper, simpler, ipod powered, and small. This thing is larger than you'd think and just feels like kinda chinzty plastic. Plus I burned through a set of batteries pretty quickly too just powering the phantom power for one mic with the headphones disconnected and volume minimized. No speaker makes headphones necessary just to check the gain levels. All in all, I hope something comes along to make portable music capture simple with decent quality, but this wasn't the solution for me.

Recorder that uses my ridiculously expensive Ipod?

I recently purchased the Alesis Protrack from Musician's Friend, and this has been perhaps the first occasion that UPS actually made the delivery on time. It has performed its job with absolute grace. Like anything, you simply have to learn how to use it, which is easier than 3rd grade arithmatics. Watch the online video about it, and I stand to second everything it says. Why get anything with some crappy SD card, when you can have the storage capacity of the hard drive in your Ipod? This isn't recording studio quality, but it's damn near close.

Works great as a video field recorder

I purchased the Alesis ProTrack 2 weeks ago for an upcoming video production assignment. I have worked with field recorders in the past, and contemplated a few that are on Musician's Friend, but settled on the Alesis after seeing what it was capable of doing, and that it recorded directly to my iPod. When the ProTrack arrived I began testing and found that the sound quality was very good. There was no noise in my audio files (they do warn you not to charge your iPod while recording because you will get some noise), and it couldn't be easier to use. The dual xlr inputs really puts this recorder into a class of it's own. Alesis has developed a protective cover for your iPod to help prevent scratches and dings that may occur. The only downfall I could find is even though they use a file naming system based on date/time, being able to insert a marker on the fly would be a great feature... not sure that's something that is possible, but it's really the only thing I could think of that I would improve, and something that would really only apply to video production use. Great job!

The concept is great & Alesis hit a home run with this. The on board condensor mics sound really good, I was skeptical of them at first but they sound great! I recorded one full night with the on board mics and another night with phantom powered condensors. The recordings came out great, transferred them to iTunes and then burned CD's. Very versatile unit, looks great. The only thing I could see better on this unit would be "detented" gain controls so you can better lock & balance the gain on both inputs. Just plain awesome, with a 160 gig iPOD, you have TONS of recording time - no flash cards that fill up quickly. Thanks Alesis!!!
