Dont buy an Alesis RA300

Alesis RA series amps have generally a very good sound and low noise. However, they also have a common problem. The sound intermittently cuts out (just whats needed in a studio amp), a sharp tap to the amp bring it back again generally. On one forum it was suggested that the problem is a faulty relay. However, when contacted Alesis "did not know of the problem" and could offer no useful advice.

After about 6 months of very light use it quit working altogether. Not a fuse issue either, the amp's shot. I barely used it. Before that it worked OK, but not an industry standard amp.

I had my Alesis RA300 for 9 months. The only trouble turned out to be another piece of equipment that was DC coupled and sending the amp a voltage offset- the amp would go silent, protecting the speakers. Clean, powerful, audiophile grade at a rational price. I will be buying another soon.

For near field monitoring in a small studio setting you can't beat the original RA100 amplifier. I've compared both side by side and I find the RA100 to be somewhat punchier and brighter sounding then it's bigger brother. The RA300 offers exceptionally smooth sound and my be more suited for use in large studio settings. So if your at home and have the original RA100... hold on to it. I'm convinced the original RA100 is one of the best amplifiers ever built for near field monitoring. It's tight, punchy and loud.
