Great sound, intuitive operation, and plenty of routing options. |
The Allen & Heath MixWizard3 16:2 Mixer is the third generation of this popular series known for its fantastic sound and functionality. MixWizard3 has a new preamp design, tailored EQ frequencies, an extra mono output (on a fader that can be switched to provide a sub-bass mix from channel aux 6), and several routing changes to make the engineer's life easier. Other new features include new styling, an extra lamp socket, new Sys-Link options, and backup power supply.
Mono Inputs
16 mic/line channels, each with 4-band EQ, HPF, individual phantom power, 6 auxes, mute switch, signal and peak indicator LEDs and a 100mm smooth-action fader. A configurable direct out and insert using all-metal TRS jacks are provided.
Stereo Mix with A/B Out
Main output controlled by 100mm faders with 12-segment 3-color metering with insert. A-B output for additional L&R stereo output selectable pre or post L&R faders. Unique underpanel mode switch to configure A-B as a local monitor output for additional stereo monitoring.
Dedicated Mono Output
Mono fader feeds mono XLR output. Source select L+R sum or aux 6 mix for creating separate mono/C or aux fed sub mix.
6 Aux Sends
6 auxiliaries: 1-2 prefade (option: link to follow pre/post switch), 3-4 switchable pre/post fade (option: permanently prefade) and 5- and 6 post fade (option to follow pre/post switch). Internal option to configure stereo channel L signal to odd auxes and R signal to even auxes. Aux masters are rotary controls with TRS outputs. The aux busses can be monitored in mono or related stereo pairs.
4-band EQ plus HPF
Mono channels have separate controls for sweep and cut/boost on mid bands. HPF @ 100Hz is switchable.
2 Stereo Returns
[TRS] line inputs, routed via level controls to L&R mix. ST1 can feed aux 1-4. Note: the internal FX returns to ST1. The ST1 input allows external FX to be mixed in.
Onboard Digital FX
32 FX programs with external MIDI editing/control. Can be configured in single mode (16 programs fed from aux 5) or Dual mode (8 programs fed from aux 5, plus another 8 programs fed from aux 6). FX are returned via ST1 to the mix, aux 1-4. The effects can be muted using a footswitch. WZ FX editor software is available from the A&H website.
Engineer's Toolbox
Headphone output and local monitor possible, with separate level controls. Red LED indicator when PFL on input channels is selected. PFL signal overrides the selected monitor source and L&R metering. A-B output can be configured as local stereo monitor.
Wizard FX Editor software
Enables sounds to be created and stored above and beyond the capability of the basic mixer. Runs under Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, and XP. Intuitive Graphical User interface with knobs and buttons to select parameters in real time. Available from the A&H website.

this small compact mixer is great. unlike other products, it will do what you ask of it. With a good system it is you fault if you can't get a good sound. I have a small band and our mackie PA system sounds alot better than before. Very clean and better control than Mackie 1604. Thanks Musicians Friend for great deal too!!!!

This board replaced my Mackie 1604 (which I still love). At first, I thought they were just tonally different, but of equal quality. After doing some serious listening, the AH is so subtley good it's scary. You can do some serious recording with these pres - great dynamic range and silky smooth, non grainy sound. If you don't have a $3000 boutique pre you won't miss it. Great mixdown board as well. Might use my mackie live still - don't want to take this out of the studio.

I would say to those who say its not built like a tank how most mackies are, its really made to rackmount. If you want a tank-like board to take on the road, save some money and pick up a GL2400. That's not to say that a Mixwizard won't hold up, keep in mind this isn't a cheap POS board, just get it in a rack with all your amps and effects processors and whatever you got in there and your not gonna regret it. The convenience is worth the cost. the thing that makes allen & heath sweet boards are the preamps. Their very smooth and clear, but still have that nice british warmth to it. The EQ's are great to work with. To those considering a cheaper mixer without sweepable EQ's, be careful. You may not not what you're missing. I have no problems with their faders as others do, mines like 3 years old and running great. The LED banks are nice, they give you like 12 of them where soundcraft might give you 7, for those who dont know the advantage, your PFLing precision is much better, you can get the most out of your preamps without clipping. The onboard effects i dont even bother with, not that theyre bad, but as with any other onboard effects processor on a board, you really dont get the control you need. if your on a budget, their great, but put a little money into a lexicon or something and youll be alot happier. i use my mixwizard 16:2 in my studio, and i dont regret buying it all. Live used various A&H boards, GL2200's, GL2400's, Mixwizard's, as well as others, and their excellent. the gap between A&H and Soundcraft really lies more in personal preference. A&H is british, Soundcraft is american. Simple as that. If you think you can get that sound out a Behringer, Peavey, or Yamaha, from someone who's tried, think again. A&H is well worth the money.

We have been using this Mixer for one year, and I have to admit.. its AMAZING and easy to set up.. started as a two person band and now we have five.. Even used this mixer at a O.N.E Music Festival in Greenwood to run one of three main stages... over 15 bands of ALL genre played on it, EACH DAY.. AMAZING.. NOW problems... and even love the Digital Processor..
