Oh, My, My, My!

This mic is so very sweet! I sung a gospel song in high soprano and it really handled it well. The balance of the lows in the mike melted my heart while laying down every vocal track. It really invigorated me to sing my heart out because I loved every word that flowed from my mouth through it. I have always been a fan of Audio Tech for years and I would recommend this mic to anyone who is serious about there music.

This is a good overall mic. It captures acoustic guitar beautifully, and it is probably one of the best mics for background vocals. I would recommend another mic for lead vocal though, because this mic is not sharp enough in the mids and is a slight too bottom heavy.

I have a pair of these in my studio. They work very well on voices and instruments. I've used them on male voices, female voices, acoustic guitars, room mics, drum overheads, room mics. I've had great results on all applications. I would recommend getting a high quality cable, I use Mogami Gold or Blue Kiwi cables myself. I'd also recommend that if you are serious about sound to buy this mic a good . But for this price range you can't go wrong. I also own Sterling Audio ST55 and ST66 condensers in my studio and have used C414, TLM103, U87, C12, KSM32, AT4033, AT4050, etc. This mic can hold it's own, definitely a major step above a Rode or AKG in this price range.

This microphone is hands down the best condenser in this price range. I was able to directly compare this mic with several others in the same price bracket and it is amazing how much this guy stands above the others. Using a presonus tube preamp into an alesis compressor, this mic records vocals and acoustic guitar with such beautiful tone. It is warm and full, and retains clarity.
Build quality is of top notch. (Made in Japan.) This is a great deal for anyone looking.

Hardcore Low End
Posted by Roe from New Orleans, Louisiana on Feb 26, 2007

Reviewer's Background: Recordist for many a days

I use this mic for vocals. The low end of this microphone is outrageous ever with the bass roll-off. The high end is perfect, but overshadowed by the booming low end. You could EQ this microphone to change the characteristics of the low end, but it is still much more powerful than one would expect. The overall sound of the 4040 is nothing short of awesome, but if your main focus is vocals take into consideration the low end of this mic. I would say this is one of the best mics created when it comes to standing out in the mix. My vocals cut through any number of tracks with unbelievable clarity. If this is your top choice for a vocal mic in this price range let me advise you of a mic that is cheaper and one of the most under-rated ever. AKG C2000 B, check that out. However, the AT4040 is an outstanding piece of work for sonic recreation.
