Designed for video production and broadcast (ENG/EFP) audio acquisition, the AT8015 Line + Gradient Condenser Microphone provides the narrow acceptance angle desirable for long-distance sound pickup, along with excellent sound rejection from the sides and rear of mic. The roll-off position reduces the pickup of low-frequency ambient noise (such as traffic, air-handling systems, etc.), room reverberation and mechanically coupled vibrations.

I did a comparison between the AT8015 and my Oktava MK012A Hypercardioid, and the Oktava was equal or better in nearly every way: - Sound quality with a loud source directly in front of the mic was slightly better with the Oktava. - Speech began sounding muffled slighly off center with the AT8015 (as expected with a shotgun). This would make it difficult keep the mic pointed exactly at the subject's mouth, especially with more than one person. - Outdoors, both mics were about equal at rejecting background noise with the subject at distances of 16" and 3' (which negates the benefit of a shotgun). - The AT8015 is not very sensitive. Connected to my camera (Z1U), I had to turn up the gain all of the way (including +12dB boost) for normal speech at about 3 feet. This caused significant hiss. - The AT8015 handled mild wind reasonably well (but you will need a better windscreen when it is windy). The Oktava is very sensitive to even very slight wind, even with a small foam windscreen. - I didn't notice any difference between phantom powered and battery powered. - Build quality of the AT8015 seems good, and the included accessories (case, foam windscreen, mic-stand clamp, 3/8" adapter, and battery) are nice. ~150Hz filter works well.

For about the same price, the Oktava is much more versatile. It sounds fuller and cleaner under perfect conditions. It rejects background noise equally well. It picks up multiple people better. For outdoor work, both mics need bigger windscreens or blimps.
