Audio-Technica's premium professional studiophones offer a flat, extended frequency response for professional studio monitoring. Superior components provide very high SPL capabilities while maintaining exceptional clarity of sound. Exterior design features include sturdy strain-relief cable and comfortable circumaural earpieces that can be rotated 180 degree to permit one-ear monitoring. The studiophones utilize 40-millimeter drives with neodymium magnets and copper-clad aluminum wire voice coils for lowest mass. They are equipped with an 11-foot cable terminated in a standard 1/4-inch connector. This field-serviceable model allows elements, cables, and earpads to be replaced in the field if needed.
These sound dull and boxy compared to other closed back and semi-open back phones I have tried. There is no open, airy quality to them, like I am used to hearing. Instead, they sound excessively midrange-heavy, with weak, poorly defined bass, and no real treble response. For the price, they're OK, but I've heard better in teh same price range.

the first thing i noticed about these is that you barely feel them on your head, they stay on but they dont grip your head like crazy...good
now the sound, i cant ask for more, everything is crisp, articulate, above all clear, and where its supposed to be...like i said i´ve fallen in love with music again, and have had the chance to hear things that i just hadn´t before...good
i am very satisfied with the sound quality these put out, they´re comfy and as a plus they look cool (you can´t really appreciate the size of these in the picture, they´re pretty big, yet light)

Muddy Sound

I am only an part-time amateur musician so take this with a grain of salt. These headphones sound very muddy to me. The bass seems to get more recognition that the trebles. The headphones I got don't seem to be very good for acoustic guitar or harp listening.
I got some Radio Shack Optimus Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (RRHF) headphones 10 years ago for only $50 that I have liked much better than these. I bought these because my the 1/4 inch jack on my RRHF phones was loose and my wife was barking at me because it was taking me too long to properly re-solder the connection.
If you want a reference to the kind of sound I like, I tend to like the MXL 991 pencil mic that some people complain as being to twangy. Yes, I know the 991 boosts the treble, maybe I just don't like flat. Maybe I just need to try some EQ out and shut up.
Anyway, I don't have a reference mic laying around to really test these phones so I am just wondering about their FLAT response claim...

Just What I Was Looking For!

I am a podcaster, and was looking for a decent set of headphones that offered both quality and a good value. I looked at a number of different headphones, but they all seemed to lack something. When I finally found these, I was impressed with the description and placed the order. When they arrived, I hooked them up and tried them out. The sound was so much better than the headphones I had been using, and I was amazed to hear what I had been missing. They are an excellent value for the price here, and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a nice set of headphones at a low price.

A few issues: mostly, the bass, in my opinion, is kinda weak. Often I'll have to open up my monitors to be absolutely sure my mix is right. The headphones also don't pick up sounds at low dB's (IE: when I listen to music in my car, even with road noise, I hear more things there than in these headphones).
Granted, these are a massive trade up from many other options that cost about the same, sometimes more. But, if you do have the money, I'd get the higher quality ones. But at this price, you really can't say no.
Last downer: despite their extreme comfort (and they are SUPER comfortable), the headband part is wide and makes my hair look goofy if I take them off.
Just make sure you double check your sound with some other system (monitors, other headphones, car audio).
