Worse than no mics

I've owned a trio of these for 4 years now and have never been able to make them sound good. I find myself embarrased to use them on recordings of any kind because they just sound like a wall of distortion, even when you manage to tighten everything enough to get rid of the mechanical rattling. I thought it may have been just because of transmission through the mount but then yesterday I heard a set of D2s clipped to the toms at a live show and with no EQ, I went "that's how tom mics should sound". Save your money on these.

Okay so, I went to recording school, I work in a recording studio, and I must say, yes these things hooked up to a big 16 inch floor tom will buzz a little bit, but when you think about it, the buzz is in the frequency range of about 500 to 700 hz. Scoop that out in the mix (which I do anyway) and my goodness what do you know, an amazing tom sound. I ALWAYS use these mics on my toms, even though theres the sennheieser 602s, sm57s, Shure PG series, these things just sound fantastic. Honestly just use them the right way and they will treat you well.

Work with them some.

I got these, put them on my 10 and 12" toms (Sonor Delite) and tried them with no EQ or FX using Reaper through a Presonus Firepod. Immediately I had fuzz from overloaded mics. I played with Preamp gain, dropped it below 0 dB and cleaned them up some. However, the real trick is that they really do not like to be close to the sound source (drum head in my case.) I now have one mic between my two toms sat around 3 inches above them and it gives a good sound over both. The other I can now try to use on my 8". The sound they produce is perfectly adequte now, I will have to play more with the placement on EQ, etc. to get them near as I want. I am using them to add roundness to the tom sounds, as my OHs pick up the attack. Working great on the 10 and 12, not so much the 8 as it has very little roundness to pick up. I have to gripe about the fact that they need to be far from the head. I bought them to be small, non-invasive and easy to position. The clip works well on a drum rim but leaves the mic high from the head....which is where you need it. However, I have LOTS of small effects cymbals right over my toms, so they dont fit where I want. OK, no more babble. SO...Overall, you need to work with them and read the instructions. They are NOT small and discrete due to positioning issues, so maybe those bigger mics without the issues these may cause you are the right choice. They seem pretty tough, well made and...well, they look cool.

Great Sound for Hand Percussion
Posted by Bacon from Buffalo, NY on Dec 27, 2008

I've used this microphone extensively for live applications and the sound is great on Bodrhan(Irish Hand Drum) and also on accordion. The sound is clear and the output is very good with our Mackie and our Carvin mixers. The mic cuts some of the super low boominess from the Bodrhan which is great. I'm sure it would sound great on many ethnic percussion instruments which have so much low end that they overwhelm other mics. This doesn't mean the mic is thin sounding. It just rolls off the low end that makes instruments sound boomy. I also use it on the accordion for my bass and it sounds very good. It captures enough low end to fill in the bass lines (we are an Irish Pub band with no bass player)in a very full and covincing manner. The negative point for this mic is the cable construction. In order to make the mic smaller, the cable is very small. Audix was wise enough to have a separate cable and mic, but it doesn't take much to break a solder connection in the cable end. The mic wasn't really designed for mobility on stage, so I am pushing the design parameters by moving around on stage. One mistep on the cable and a good pull on the cable connector will require some good soldering skills for repair. It is a very tiny cable connector, and takes some precision to repair. Still it is repairable and well worth the money. I paid full price for mine (139.00) and I thought it was worthwhile at that price.

READ THE MANUAL!!

For people who write these reviews and say they know what they're talking about because of their years of "experience", I say to you; read the owner's manual! The very first thing you will notice is that these are CONDENSER mics. Not dynamic. why do you think they need phantom power? they DO NOT need to sit as close to a drumhead as a dynamic. They are not designed that way. These are great mics, especially live if used as mentioned in the manual. Again, read the manual and you will love these mics.
