I don't like the way this mic is treble-biased. It makes my deep voice sound to high and doesn't give any fatness or sound color. The lows are virtually non-existant. It sounds too plain for this deeper voiced singer. It would be good for women or a male with a midrange or higher voice.

I have aquired many mics over the years, so when I open my mic bag I have everything from sm58, beta58, beyern, vtech, ibanez, samson, akg, but when I get to the studio or a live show, I found the om5 to be the best mic I ever used. Sound is clear and works well with my voice,shure makes my voice tinny and thin and higher pitched then it really is, also, highly resistant to feedback, and I have a very loud voice, cannot distort this thing! Try something other then the basic choices, you will be very happy.

For the money, the OM-5 is a very decent microphone. I used to use an SM57 at live acoustic gigs which worked wonders, but when that quit I decided to purchase an OM-5. The OM-5 required a lot more EQ than the SM57 in order to sound great; the SM57 was very flat in comparison, and worked great on my voice. This mic shines in a rock setting; above a wall of distorted guitar and full-force drum; cutting. Powerful.

Thankfully, I had the chance to A/B this with an SM58. The SM58 was clearer, especially in the highs, but the Audix OM-5 was richer and more defined throughout the whole spectrum.

I also A/B'd them both on my guitar amp (Marshall/Mesa Boogie). The OM-5 once again is richer, more complex, but the SM58 is cleaner and allows the guitar to cut through the mix better.

For drums, the OM-5 is less than satisfactory. On the snare, it's almost impossible to get a clean, defined crack. You're left with a muddy, hollow snare sound.

Great live vocal mic! Not so hot on instruments.

Shure has always been the standard, but if you don't mind stepping outside of the box, you will find that this microphone is superior. We have used the Audix OM-5 for singing as well as overall recording, without issue or compromise. Many people are amazed as well at the mic's ability to resist feedback. Our harmonica player even says it is better than the mic he has been using. This mic has not only become our mic of choice, but it's performace has convinced others to switch over to Audix as well. You won't be sorry...

This mic is of very high quality and the sound it produces is evident. Excalent responce and clear as a bell. No distorstion or popping. Very little handling noise if any, (I have heavy hands). Like the om-7 you need to have a good powered mixer or a pre-amp to make this mic "sing" It performs very good on stage and is as tough as they come. I have had it now for more than three years and it has not let me down. I will not sing through anything else.
