The Audix VX5 is a hand-held vocal condenser microphone designed to handle a wide variety of live, studio and broadcast applications.

With a smooth frequency response of 40 Hz - 16.5 kHz (plus or minus 3 dB), the VX5 microphone features a 14mm gold vapor diaphragm, a supercardioid polar pattern, a -10 dB pad, a bass roll-off filter, an acoustically ported steel mesh grill screen, and a rugged die cast zinc body.

The VX5 will handle sound pressure levels in excess of 140 dB (in the pad and roll-off position) without distortion and will additionally provide over 20 dB of ambient noise rejection for feedback control on live stages.

The Audix VX5 operates on phantom power of 9-52 volts and will achieve optimum results when used with a high quality mic preamp. In addition to vocal applications, the VX5 mic is ideally suited to capture acoustic instruments such as guitar, woodwinds, brass, percussion toys, and drum overheads and hi-hat.

I was using the usual Shure SM58's which are in their field, the touring war horse. rugged & indestructible (almost), but not the clearest sound. I got a couple of these almost 2 years ago, and they have become my mic of choice. You can also see the review I wrote on Audix's website for more detail. I have been quite careful with them, so I don't know how rugged they are compared to the Shures. I have since purchased several others. I love the clarity and definition. You can really hear your voice - even in the monitors. Sounds like the paper bag has been lifted off the mic!

I picked this up Dec 07 as a replacement upgrade for my beloved Audix OM5, which I lost at a gig (believe it or not, I eventually got that one back). It took a solid several months to feel my way around on this mic before I was completely comfortable with it, but in a word: Damn!

The clarity and volume are absolutely remarkable. You don't have to scream or growl at full force to make it pick up your voice (unless you want to). Once you find its sweet spots this thing almost acts like its own compressor. Keep your mouth off it. Optimal distance is about 2" away.

Am forced to give it an average rating on 'Features' because: A) How many features do you get (or need) on ANY mic? And B) If it slips down into your hand so you're cradling that bottom screen, feedback is about guaranteed. This is true whether you're holding it or gripping on a stand.

Great piece of gear! They could easily charge 50 bucks more and it'd be well worth it.
