The BBE 482i Sonic Maximizer is perfect for home studios, DJ systems, PA systems, nightclub sound, and guitar, bass, or keyboard racks—any application not requiring balanced jacks. It provides processing for stereo or 2 separate mono channels—brightening, clarifying, and adding fullness to the sound. Features 5-segment LED output meters, +18dBu headroom, RCA and 1/4" inputs and outputs, and a bypass switch for comparison of processed to unprocessed signal. Occupies one rackspace.

The BBE Process-"What it Is"

Loudspeakers have difficulty working with the electronic signals supplied by an amplifier. These difficulties cause such major phase and amplitude distortion that the sound reproduced by the speaker differs significantly from the sound produced by the original source.
In the past, these problems proved unsolvable and were thus relegated to a position of secondary importance in audio system design. However, phase and amplitude integrity is essential to accurate sound reproduction. Research shows that the information which the listener translates into the recognizable characteristics of a live performance are intimately tied into complex time and amplitude relationships between the fundamental and harmonic components of a given musical note or sound. These relationships define a sound's "sound".
When these complex relationships pass through a speaker, the proper order is lost. The higher frequencies are delayed. A lower frequency may reach the listener's ear first or perhaps simultaneously with that of a higher frequency. In some cases, the fundamental components may be so time-shifted that they reach the listener's ear ahead of some or all of the harmonic components.
This change in the phase and amplitude relationship on the harmonic and fundamental frequencies is technically called "envelope distortion." The listener perceives this loss of sound integrity in the reproduced sound as "muddy" and "smeared." In the extreme, it can become difficult to tell the difference between musical instruments, for example, an oboe and a clarinet.
BBE Sound, Inc. conducted extensive studies of numerous speaker systems over a ten year period. With this knowledge, it became possible to identify the characteristics of an ideal speaker and to distill the corrections necessary to return the fundamental and harmonic frequency structures to their correct order. While there are differences among various speaker designs in the magnitude of their correction, the overall pattern of correction needed is remarkably consistent.
The BBE Process is so unique that 42 patents have been awarded by the U.S. Patent Office.

A Little Kicker

I run two Fender EVH Heads and I tried this 482i Max Model because it has twin channels and 1/4"unballanced connections. So that made it easy to simply run through the loop. First impression was not too impressive. At first I could barely tell a difference. The EVH Fenders are pretty thick as it is. But after messing with it I can see a large enough difference to make the unit a keeper. It adds a bit more bottom end punch and then when removed out the amp's SEND RETURN the amp actually sounds thinner and tad lighter. A pretty poor way of explaining it but this is an EQ for dummies without the PQ4 Price.

BBE makes some very simple, GREAT quality products, and this is one of them! These sonic maximizers can be used for anything when it comes to sound. DJing, live pa, vocals, acoustic, electric (clean or dirty), bass, home stereos, sound for your game systems or PC's, even record players. It does what it says it does. The knobs really don't even have to be turned much at all! Plug it in-line with whatever you want before you power amplifier and you'll clean up your tone wonderfully! It eliminates a lot of pink noise that causes ear fatigue, it cleans up the highs and lows, makes your speaker systems sound much much better than stock, makes vocals cut thru the mix better and makes it sound like they are using a more expensive mic than they really are. It makes your guitar system sound fuller and more alive, and same for bass - it makes your bass really come alive. I highy recommend it to anyone for any plugged in application. Obviously you can use it to record anything, or even use it to clean up the frequencies/eq for a stereo mixdown for CD. Get it... you will be impressed.

I just added the 482i to my DJ system. I run it with a PEAVEY 696F with PR15 speakers and I could not believe how well it sounded. I wish I would have bought the 482i at the same time I got my system 5 year's ago, it sound's so so much better. It's like I have 5000 watts not 1200. The 482i makes the singers sound like they are pros. I definately recommend this product to everyone. I will soon be bying another 482i sonic maximizer for my other system.
