The BBE 882i Sonic Maximizer is perfect for pro studios, sound reinforcement, clubs, and other venues requiring balanced outputs. Designed for uses requiring low noise, high headroom, and +4dBu input levels. It provides either stereo processing or processing for two separate mono channels, brightening, clarifying, and adding fullness to the sound. Features 5-segment LED output meters, +23dBu headroom, XLR and 1/4" stereo inputs and outputs, hardwired bypass, and a bypass switch for comparison of processed to unprocessed signals. Single rackspace.

The BBE Process-"What it Is"

Loudspeakers have difficulty working with the electronic signals supplied by an amplifier. These difficulties cause such major phase and amplitude distortion that the sound reproduced by the speaker differs significantly from the sound produced by the original source.
In the past, these problems proved unsolvable and were thus relegated to a position of secondary importance in audio system design. However, phase and amplitude integrity is essential to accurate sound reproduction. Research shows that the information which the listener translates into the recognizable characteristics of a live performance are intimately tied into complex time and amplitude relationships between the fundamental and harmonic components of a given musical note or sound. These relationships define a sound's "sound".
When these complex relationships pass through a speaker, the proper order is lost. The higher frequencies are delayed. A lower frequency may reach the listener's ear first or perhaps simultaneously with that of a higher frequency. In some cases, the fundamental components may be so time-shifted that they reach the listener's ear ahead of some or all of the harmonic components.
This change in the phase and amplitude relationship on the harmonic and fundamental frequencies is technically called "envelope distortion." The listener perceives this loss of sound integrity in the reproduced sound as "muddy" and "smeared." In the extreme, it can become difficult to tell the difference between musical instruments, for example, an oboe and a clarinet.
BBE Sound, Inc. conducted extensive studies of numerous speaker systems over a ten year period. With this knowledge, it became possible to identify the characteristics of an ideal speaker and to distill the corrections necessary to return the fundamental and harmonic frequency structures to their correct order. While there are differences among various speaker designs in the magnitude of their correction, the overall pattern of correction needed is remarkably consistent.
The BBE Process is so unique that 42 patents have been awarded by the U.S. Patent Office.

This unit is an absolute must-have for anyone involved in audio production. I first purchased a BBE sonic maximizer years ago for a home studio set-up and instantly, my mixes were better, balanced and more focused due to the nuances the BBE process brings out.

Years later I still religiously use BBE Sonic Maximizers for live and pro studio work and cannot fathom removing them from my signal path.

I recently bought this rack unit and it's nothing less than amazing. It really shapes your tone and gives it a pro sound like some of the pros get. I enjoy it a lot and it works well with all types of music too. It is hard to find a piece of gear that does that but this little devil sure paacks a punch! It also boosts your volume up. I play with a Peavey jsx head with 2 4x12 Marshall cabs and it sounds amazing! Great job BBE.

I purchased this unit about 2 months ago and haven't had any issues with it. Its built well and feels extremely solid. I wouldn't say it works miracles for my tone but its almost like it helps me push my stack to the limit. I run it through a 6505 head and basson cab. I've never really experimented with this item on my clean channel though only lead channel. I pretty much view this item as a very basic eq/signal organizer that has great results. More so for the style of music I play (heavy, low tuned melodic riffs). I recommend this to every guitarist who plays some sort of hardcore, metal, or death metal. This unit helps stabilize your low end and gives your amp the capabilities of pushing that low end further then the amp alone can(great for break downs). This high end contour is also great, its extremely useful for solos and other leads. Overall this unit has helped me with my high gain applications. It helps keep everything clean, tight, and solid even at high volumes.

The Sonic Cleaner

I run my full mix through the BBE 882i Sonic Maximizer in my PA rig. I have a 16 channel Yamaha passive board, a Behringer feedback destroyer, a QSC amplifier. I use NADY wedge monitors in my music room for practice. When I first hooked up the Maximizer I thought "OK this thing just is an EQ that boosts bass and treble...big deal." But then I realized that there truly was added clarity to both ends. I have a Yamaha DTS II Xtreme e-drum kit which sounds great in headphones. I didn't like how it sounded through the PA - cymbals were fuzzy and dull. With the Maximizer it restored the sound, making it just as clear as the headphones. NADY are definitely cheap speakers and the Maximizer did the trick in cleaning up the sound. I have not tried it yet with my EV speakers to see if there is a difference with higher end speakers. Overall, I would recommend it. You might consider getting one of the cheaper versions unless you absolutely need the XLR connections.

I don't know

I run my entire mix through the maximizer (vocals, bass, and sometimes drums), and I can't really tell the difference between on and off. I am not saying this is a bad product. Here are some reasons I may not be able to tell:

* On a single line (ie just voice or just guitar), the product may shine better * I have good speakers, and this may make bad speakers sound good, but not touch good speakers much.

I am not sure, but everyone I've talked to who knew more than me said these were great.
