The BBE Process-"What it Is"

Loudspeakers have difficulty working with the electronic signals supplied by an amplifier. These difficulties cause such major phase and amplitude distortion that the sound reproduced by the speaker differs significantly from the sound produced by the original source.
In the past, these problems proved unsolvable and were thus relegated to a position of secondary importance in audio system design. However, phase and amplitude integrity is essential to accurate sound reproduction. Research shows that the information which the listener translates into the recognizable characteristics of a live performance are intimately tied into complex time and amplitude relationships between the fundamental and harmonic components of a given musical note or sound. These relationships define a sound's "sound".
When these complex relationships pass through a speaker, the proper order is lost. The higher frequencies are delayed. A lower frequency may reach the listener's ear first or perhaps simultaneously with that of a higher frequency. In some cases, the fundamental components may be so time-shifted that they reach the listener's ear ahead of some or all of the harmonic components.
This change in the phase and amplitude relationship on the harmonic and fundamental frequencies is technically called "envelope distortion." The listener perceives this loss of sound integrity in the reproduced sound as "muddy" and "smeared." In the extreme, it can become difficult to tell the difference between musical instruments, for example, an oboe and a clarinet.
BBE Sound, Inc. conducted extensive studies of numerous speaker systems over a ten year period. With this knowledge, it became possible to identify the characteristics of an ideal speaker and to distill the corrections necessary to return the fundamental and harmonic frequency structures to their correct order. While there are differences among various speaker designs in the magnitude of their correction, the overall pattern of correction needed is remarkably consistent.

As an owner of two other BBE Sonic Maximizer items (482i rack unit and the Sonic Stomp)taking a chance on this direct box was a no brainer. I started my experience with BBE with the purchase of the 482i rack unit. I have written a review for that already, but in short on one of my rigs I run a Line 6 POD Pro with a QSC 1804 power amp and some 4x12's. This unit sounded great before the 482i. Once I hooked that baby up I was blown away. I knew at that moment that a Sonic Maximizer would be a part of my sound from then on. My other rig is simply a Line 6 PODxt Live with a Shure wireless unit. I run this into the PA at church and monitor with an AVIOM system. Now I'm not bragging here, but the church I attend and devote my talents to goes way above and beyond when it comes to music equipment (no need to list stuff). Let's just say that quality is a must and a high quality music production is what God deserves from us. I have been using a Whirlwind Director DI for a couple of years, but I missed the Sonic Maximizer. When I showed up for practice this morning, there on the drum riser was the BBE DI-1000 that I had requested a couple of weeks ago. I plugged it up and set the controls and instantly was in love all over again. I couldn't believe how much better a good sound could get.

To wrap it all up folks, lots of people who use these units don't know exactly how to say what the Sonic Maximizer "does". You have to use one to know what you are missing. This DI is simply amazing in every respect. My sound is right where I want it. Getting a better DI as part of the deal was really good too.

The BBE DI-1000 is one premium DI box that is worth it. Construction: USA, solid aluminum chassis, rubber bottom, quality switches. Sound is clean, quiet, crisp, clear, etc. BBE effect gives warmth to midrange, clarity, and a shine on the top-end. Top-end can be made too bright, so don't overdo BBE effect and watch your guitar/mixer EQ. If you don't need the BBE effect, the Boss DI-1 is fine (own that too).
