Get Real Behringer

I bought two to these from Musicians Friend. Cute little amps good for driving 4 ohm monitors in a studio or home setting. But they fall 130 watts short of the claimed 230 watts. They only put out 20-21 volts before clipping into a 4 ohm load. Below is a comparison using a dummy load and an oscilloscope. All measurements using a dummy load and measuring usable power before clipping.

Peavey CS 400 Rated claim 28 VRMS @ 4 ohms. Actual reading 26 VRMS. Just a tad short.

Crest LA 601. Rated 250 watts @ 4 ohms. Falls short with only 29 VRMS. A larger exaggeration, but healthy enough.

Behringer 500. Claims 230 watts @ 4 ohms. Only delivers 20 volts rms before clipping. That is 100 watts, folks. So where did the other 130 watts go?

This amp drives my smaller monitors very nicely. It will make a quiet small living room sound system. I am actually using it for practice vocals in my studio, on a 3 way system, where it performs very well at moderate levels. If you only NEED 100 watts, this amp is a little jewel. Especially for driving small studio monitors with power to spare.

So if you need 230 watts, look to someone like Yamaha. I put a Yamaha 300 watt amp on a scope, and it delivered 326 watts @ 4 ohms RMS CLEAN! So some companies do rate below actual specs.

Have this amp now for over a year and run it into my Klipsch monitors. This amp is awesome - the high frequencies are crystal clear and the bass is real tight. Great job Behringer! This is a highly recommended amp.

Nice and Clean

I purchased this power amp to run a boss digital multi-effects unit into a 4X12 guitar cabinet. I have never had a cleaner sound come through my cab. I can set up my effects channels with head phones at home, then when I run the output through this amp, it reproduces my tones and effects with little to no coloring of the audio signal. It doesn't have any bells or whistles but what it does have, good clean sound amplification, it has in spades.

Audio keeps going out

I purchased this amp back in 2006 for my home studio, and one of the channel outputs stopped working within a week or so… so Musicians Friend took it back and gave me another identical one. Okay, not a problem at fist; sometimes there are problems, and I can deal with that; but then 2 ½ years later, the 2nd amp did the exact same thing; one of the channel outputs stopped working, and now I’m stuck with having to buy another one.

I’ve worked in radio for fifteen years as both on-air and technical, and I’ve never seen amps that go bad as often as this model; twice it happened to me, so don’t let it happen to you. I would recommend another brand name.

I know how to handle equipment and properly maintain them, and I kept this amp in a well-ventilated rack; there’s no excuse for this.

My 50 Watt integrated amp died and needed replacement. I wanted something without bells and whistles because I have equalizers, switch boxes, etc. I just wanted clarity and power to drive my hi-fi speakers. My goal was to feel music and rattle walls. I hooked up the new amp using 18 gauge zip cord that I had before. Well, the results were unimpressive and the amp kept limiting out and cutting off the speakers. I went and purchased "monster" cables as a last resort. Well, the amp now delivers the volume and bass that I was missing. Absolute power is absolute happiness.
