The CM-311A is the latest version of the Crown's proprietary Differoid technology. Its cardioid pickup pattern rejects sounds from the rear, such as floor monitors. Its noise-canceling ability rejects sounds at a distance, such as instruments on stage and crowd noise. This results in the CM-311A having outstanding gain-before-feedback and isolation.
Designed for touring and live-sound applications, the Crown CM-311A is a rugged head-worn microphone with unequalled performance. It sounds like the best handheld microphones-full, clear, and distortion-free, even with the loudest singers.
Lightweight and comfortable, the mic's headband and boom adjust to fit any singer. An included pop filter greatly reduces breath noise and pops. Because of the boom's unique behind-the-ear design, it does not cover up the singer's face.
The CM-311A is powered by a 9V battery or phantom power. It has a battery belt pack with an on/off switch, a programmable mic on/off switch, and a "Mic On" LED.

Great mic, A few things I would fix

I have owned 3 of these mic's over the past 13 years. The mic, over all sounds better than most mic's and being a singing drummer, is perfect for my needs. The comments I have read about the head set. It will bend/adjust and is pretty easy to make it fit any head. I have had to retap the set screw on one of mine and replace the wing nut. The problems I have had are: Had to cut a section out of the small cord at the power pack. If I turn it on with the PA on,it just about pops the speakers so I agree with having a Volume control on the power pack. Needs one bad. This last mic, I have found that even with a brand new battery, it fades . If I cut it off and then back on it comes back.
This is not good when playing out. Unfortunantly, I am getting ready to buy my fourth one. They do wear out. I now have two that are garbage and the one I have now is just about done. Time for a new one. This is about as honest as I could be about my favorite mic.

Best headset mic but could be improved

The mic itself is excellent. The quality is equivalent to good Shures and the condenser element is a real plus. I used to use the Audio Technica headset and this is MUCH better at suppressing extraneous noise. The headband is so-so. It's kind of a pain to adjust but stays in place once you get it where you want it. You do have to be careful because the thumbscrew can come out entirely and get lost. The little pop filter Crown supplies is worthless and the plastic part on mine broke fairly quickly. I replaced it with one of the pop filters from my Audio Technica and no problems since. The previous comment about the length of the cable from the mic to the battery pack is entirely correct. It definitely needs to be longer. A volume control on the battery pack would also be nice. A 9-volt battery will last a good long time as long as you remember to turn the unit off when not in use. The case is rather poorly designed and it's difficult to get the mic assembly to fit into it properly. This is a good product if you need to use a headset mic but it could definitely use some improvements.

Drummer worn

I've been using this mic as an weekend musician for about a year. As a singing drummer, a head mic was a must to keep my motions natural and my visibility unrestricted. I run it through an ART Tube MP Studio Preamp (for the phantom power and a signal boost). This set-up performs great. In fact, I personally think it sounds better then the Shure 58s that the guitar players use. And I'd say that its on par with the Shure Beta 87A that one other band member uses. I've never once had a feed back problem. The wire "head band" design is a bit questionable; but it is functional. Basically, you hand bend the wire frame to match the contour of your head, and then you trim any excess off (a tin-snip is handy for this). It's designed to fit one person, and one person only. Any adjustment to get the mic boom properly positioned can be accomplished with a thumbscrew. One you have it where you want, simple tighten the screw (finger tight). Once you've got it set-up, you should never have to make an adjustment again. Just throw it around your ears and you're ready. On a side note... With a slight amount of pressure, the booms design still allow you to rotate the mic away from your mouth when you don't want it there (no loosening of any hardware required). And then simply rotate it back when you need it. I have not used the 9v battery compartment, so I am unable to comment on the functionality of the battery phantom power. The on-off switch on the pack is a great bonus, though. My only real complaint is that I wish they made the cord from the mic to the battery pack a bit longer. With the pack clipped to my belt and running up my back, the cord is in full tension when I look downwards too far.

I am a guitar playing, female vocalist. I also play flute. I love this mic for the simple fact that it is unobtrusive and sounds better than any other mic I have ever used in 30+ years of working on the stage. I hope Crown will continue to perfect the head gear and boom so it does not wear out and the screws become damaged so quickly. Even if they don't do some changes, I intend to use THIS MIC as long as I am still singing and playing.

It may fit Garth Brooks' head but not mine! This mic sounds fantastic on speech and vocals -- it has great presence -- but the ill-conceived boom mechanism makes it nigh unusable if your head isn't the right circumference. The headband is not adjustable and would not fit my head no matter how much I fiddled with it (OK, my head is too big). The headband has a hook on each end which is supposed to hook over your ear like a pair of eyeglasses worn backwards. Crown really needs to rethink their design; it's a shame such a great-sounding mic is sunk by a bad design of such a simple mechanism. If it weren't for this problem I would rate the mic a 5.
