Rear Right-facing with Guitarist Left-facing Powersupply PS0913B

The DigiTech Vocalist Live 2 Harmony Processor uses breakthrough musIQ technology to directly analyze the output of any electric or pre-amplified acoustic guitar (no special MIDI guitars or hex-outputs needed). Then it generates the correct vocal harmony. For example, if you're singing an A over the chords that are generally found in the key of G, Vocalist will harmonize with a C. But, if you then play an A major, the Digitech Vocalist will shift to the C#...because like any good harmony singer, it listens to the guitar!

A surprising number of songs "fool" other harmony pedals because these songs just don't work with a single key/scale setting. In fact, any song that has the same note sung over two different chords (for example, a C sung in the melody over a C maj / F maj chord sequence) is going to confound conventional harmony pedals.

With musIQ, forget about the technology just sing and play! Skip complicated programming and having to analyze each song chord-by-chord; just 1. Plug in your microphone and guitar; 2. Pick a 3rd or 5th-above or below harmony preset; 3. Sing and play — when you want harmony, just step on the footswitch!

Patent-pending musIQ technology combines new Note Detection algorithms with state-of-the-art Harmony Generation. The Note Detection section analyzes complex guitar waveforms and determines which notes in each chord are critical to accurate harmony. This information is then fed to an advanced harmony engine that creates harmonies consistent with both the singer's melody and the underlying guitar accompaniment.

This totally new, musically-intelligent effects processor hybrid of traditional chordal and scalic harmony modes means that Vocalist Live musIQ harmonies stay true to not only the overall key and song scale, but also localized variations due to chords that aren't part of the global key. You've never heard anything like it!

The magic mother of all boxes

I bought my Digitech Vocalist Live 2 about 8 months ago. I must say this is the best piece of equipment I’ve added to my arsenal. I’m a weekend singer/acoustic guitar player in a very well known Northern Arizona resort town. The Vocalist 2 is everything most reviewers claim it is. Easy to use, constructed well, and sounds fantastic. I have an 85-plus song set list and use this pedal on maybe 25 songs. Like adding spices to a soup, you do not want to over use this thing. I mainly drop it in on the chorus, or on a choice couple of words or lines in a verse here and there. It just simply adds that special something that seems missing when you are a lone voice out there trying to get audience attention. And it truly does turn heads when you use it. People will come up and ask you what you are using.

I will say that it won’t make a poor singer sound good, but it will take a decent singer and add a new dimension to your sound and open up possibilities by allowing you to do songs you normally would not do as a soloist. I think the reverb choices at first seem limited, but it is very easy to find a sweet spot and when you do, why change it? The compressor is simple, I know why some other reviewers don’t like it, but I like what it offers and it works effectively without quashing the sound of your voice. The enhancer (which is preset eq) gives you 3 choices and a mix knob that lets you dial in how much of it you want (the reverb has the same setup). I like to use the Resonance for songs I sing in my lower register, like Johnny Cash and several blues songs. The Clarity and Shine add mids/highs and sparkle and I use those as well for other songs.

The choices for harmonies let you pick one or two parts in any combination, with a third up, fifth up, third down, fifth down, and two unison choices – one follows your voice exactly and the other follows chromatically. I like using a third up and fifth up for country songs. A third up and fifth down works well on some blues songs. Using just a third up adds a nice simple harmony that fits with major key songs. A fifth up works well on edgy type songs with more minor chords. I’ve been doing Norwegian Wood for years, now when I get to the chorus I click it on and with a fifth up it’s sounds like Paul is right there singing with me! I’m not as fond of the unison voices, but on several songs I will use it with a third or a fifth and it fattens the harmonies. The neat thing is this pedal really does read your guitar chords and selects the harmony appropriate as in major or minor. I was skeptical at first, until I tested it, played a G-major chord, held a steady vocal tone and then switched to a G-minor and I could hear the harmonies drop a half step. VERY COOL!

Overall I say this pedal is like magic if used right. It will take some practice, and a little time figuring out what combinations of choices to use with what songs and when, and then getting a simple notation system on your play list to remember it all. You will sound better, be more entertaining and turn heads, and you’ll be able to expand your playlist and do some different songs. No other pedal out there can do all that!

Simply WOW!

Okay, so I have had this for some time now and been expirimenting with it. It didn't take me long at all to set this up, dial it in, figure out which voicings match me the best and just use the heck out of it.

When I was interested in buying this, I read all the reviews I could find most of which were good. What really sold me on it was watching people demo this on youtube, where you could actually hear it. Hearing it is beleiving, it really is amazing what comes out of it. Kinda spooky to have these invisible voices singing along with you just doing their thing. As another reviewer mentioned, it's pretty special when you make that human connection with harmonies, but you're not always with humans who can do that. In which case, you really can't get any closer than this.

Simply put, it's magic.

I fired my band

I play with a band then go off and do a few solo gigs. There were some cross-over songs that I could not do without the band because harmony was necessary. The Digitech Vocalist was the answer. Very good quality and though not quite as meaningful as hitting harmonies with another human, it works wonders for solo work. I use it sparingly to add some zest to a few songs or parts of songs and especially like having the harmony very quiet for a ghosting effect (Really fattens me up). Easy to use and nobody sees me tapping the footswitch, but out-of-nowhere another voice appears. I can now play "The Boxer" and make it sound like Garfunkel showed up while Simon is the only one on stage. Blows an audiences' mind. For the price you can't pass this quality piece of gear up.

I've only been using this product for a short time, but thus far it has been more than i expected.I did alot of reviewing and checking into before i made my purchase and i can say it has been a great experience. The harmonies are excellent. The reverb is respectable, but the compression is ok at best. I can live with that cause after messing around with different settings and harmonies I have acheived some great results. The guitar thru is quiet which is important when running any effects, ( i run an LR Baggs Para Acoustic DI, then to a Fishman Aura pedal and out to the PA. If you are a soloist this box will add some great color to your gigs! Definitely worth it!
