DigiTech Vocalist Live 4 is a harmony processor that features an onboard mixer and footswitches for easy use by singing guitarists. Vocalist Live 4 also features breakthrough musIQ technology to make it more intelligent. A surprising number of songs fool other harmony pedals because these songs just don't work with a single key/scale setting. In fact, any song that has the same note sung over 2 different chords (for example, a C sung in the melody over a C maj / F maj chord sequence) is going to confound conventional harmonizing devices.

Vocalist Live 4's musIQ technology allows it to directly analyze the output of any electric or pre-amplified acoustic guitar (no special MIDI guitars or hex-outputs needed). Then it generates the correct vocal harmony. For example, if you're singing an A over the chords that are generally found in the key of G, Vocalist will harmonize with a C. But, if you then play an A major, Vocalist will shift to the C# because like any good harmony singer, it listens to the guitar!

With musIQ, forget about the technology-just sing and play! Skip complicated programming and having to analyze each song chord-by-chord; just
1. Plug in your microphone and guitar;
2. Pick a 3rd or 5th-above or below harmony preset;
3. Sing and play — when you want harmony, just step on the footswitch!

Patent-pending musIQ technology combines new note detection algorithms with state-of-the-art harmony generation. The Note Detection section analyzes complex guitar waveforms and determines which notes in each chord are critical to accurate harmony. This information is then fed to an advanced harmony engine that creates harmonies consistent with both the singer's melody and the underlying guitar accompaniment.

This totally new, musically-intelligent hybrid of traditional chordal and scalic harmony modes means that Vocalist Live 4 musIQ harmonies stay true to not only the overall key and song scale, but also localized variations due to chords that aren't part of the global key. You've never heard anything like it!

Great but noise floor is too much!

Great product, except the hiss that comes out of this thing is unbelievable. One other reviewer mentioned this, and like him, I tried every combination of cables and ground lifts, phantom power on/off, mics, XLR vs unbalanced, and came to the conclusion there is just a very high noise floor in the electronics. It sounds like single coil pickups on an old Tele (well, almost..). That is the only thing I have to say against it, but it is a substantial negative that everyone needs to know about. I thought maybe I had a bad unit, but then saw the other review, so my guess is that it is common. I highly recommend understanding the pitch correction feature, as it is not usually on in the presets - it helps to keep the harmonies solid, and as most people don't have perfect pitch, it helps the lead vocal too. Other than that, I pretty much agree with the other comments on this review page.

It's just ok

I researched this thoroughly & I read all the glowing reviews before buying it. There is hardly anything negative written about this, so I figured it must be the greatest thing in music history. I'll make it short and sweet: the actual vocal processing is very limited with regard to reverb and EQ. For EQ, you can choose bass, treble, mid, and adjust the mid range. Lame. The reverbs are servicable but sound very amateur. It's either too much or too little, I've yet to find that sweet spot in 7+ months of using this. And if you're buying this for the pitch correction & harmonies to save your bacon, you might want to spend the extra money on voice lessons or on hiring a backup singer. Save your money and buy the new TC Helicon. I saw another vocalist using it and it sounded amazing. The Vocalist 4 couldn't hold a candle to it.

I have had mine for about a week. It's one of the best inventions ever. I have used it in home recording and live. It sounds great. And because of the built in guitar effects, it's the only processor I need! It has simplified my setup, and sounds great.

This thing is touchy you don't want to over use it. You have to be real carefull on your settings it is a little spendy but I like it. It helps on the songs that need lots of backup just remember DON'T OVER USE IT!!!!!! I hope you like it like I do....
