I'am a Music Producer from Costa Rica, here the standart software in the music industry is Pro tools, I've been using Digital Performer since 1999 and and get bored of the 2408 sound and It's latency, using my G4 work horse computer. I bought my Digi 03 in 2007 and I Love the sound of the preamps and the protools LE software. The only thing I hate is that there are not many options of expanding the unit to add more analog I/O, you have to deal with 18 I/O only and in some cases you need more than 18 I/O to plug outboard FX's to make analog mixes using analog outboard.

I purchase a Digi 003 last year and I am running Protools 8. The Digi 003 is a great piece of gear and it function perfectly on Intel Mac computer. I found that the Digi Rack is extremely easy to use. I comes with tons of plugins! The unit has expansion capability by ADAT. Which give you a total of 18 input and output. There is zero latency and the pre amp sounds clean. Before I bought the unit I looked at several other brands like the MOTU and Presonus, but found that the Digi Rack was simple and straight to the point. The other units have their own mixer utility which you have to control along with you music application mixer. With the Digi R ack you only have to control one mixer which makes it a breeze for setup a recording session. Get the Digi Rack and you can't go wrong!!

Digi003 vs Digi001

I have been using a Digi001 since about 2001. I have had a few different computers and versions of MS Windows. I used to have problems when I was using Windows ME. When PCs got faster and I got XP things got better. Now I have a much faster system with Win XP and I don't seem to ever have problems. I use AMD 2600+ with 1GB Ram. I use a 10,000rpm disk also, which is actually the key to getting proper performance from your hardware and software. If your disk is not keeping up you will have all kinds of buffering, Interrupt and other general basic PC issues. I recently got a wild hair and decided to go and get the 003 because I had the money and I wanted a newer version of Protools and some plug-ins and all the goodies I seem to have missed with the Digi001. Well when I got it home is when the real fun started. I had to completely remove my current version of PT and the hardware card for the 001. I installed the software and hooked up the firewire cable and instantly got an error about reconfiguring the buffers for better performance. Initially I knew I would have some issues being a PC systems Engineer for 15 years did not help. I put it all back in the box in about 45 minutes and reinstalled PT6.4le and the hardware and I was back in business. What was I thinking. Beware of the "Comsumer Grade" stuff out now. The old Digi001 is just a simpler version of PTHD with hardware processing onboard (big HELP!) for the consumer market that is actually very high quality and reflects their dedication to Professional Studio Recording. I have been using is for years and will continue to use it without problems.

First off I am a LONG time ProTools user. I have used the LE as well as HD versions throughout my career. I would also like to mention that I am ProTools certified.

That being said, what the 003R offers is great on any level! You do NOT get any latency unless you don't know how to change the buffer settings. Using the 003 with PT LE works so well together it is awesome. I have also used many other interfaces with programs such as LOGIC and Nuendo and the 003 by far has the best usability.

As far as the quality, the preamps on there are pretty clean. You will get a solid recording with it.

Yes, for the first time user, installation cam be a little tricky but Digidesign wants to make sure you buy the program and not a boot-leg.

Overall I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to record with ease and quality.

I have owned a 002 and have since used the 003. The latency problems with the 002R were so bad, it ended up in a garbage can. And that's running it with a Dual 2.7ghz G5. I know someone who is going through the same problem with the 003R and he is using a Mac Pro w/dual 3.0ghz and 8 gigs of ram! In the long run, spend the money, go Apogee w/Logic Pro and avoid the Walmart quality you get with the 003R. I would also recommend McDSP Plug Ins. Very DSP efficient.
