I used the Mbox 2 Pro to home-record acoustic instruments and backing vocals for a folk-pop album. I used it in combination with a fairly high-quality preamp rather than using the Mbox's pres, so I can't comment on the preamp quality. But as a hub for connecting all parts of my home recording setup, it has worked great. The 2 headphone outputs are handy so that my bassist can track while we both monitor. It has the right number of inputs for me, recording one track at a time in 2 different rooms (I don't think it would have enough inputs for a full band). The ProTools LE software that comes with it is worth the price by itself. The software is high-quality and has allowed me to do a ton of work on my recordings at home, while being able to easily open my files in the studio setting (which uses the ProTools HD system, not LE). This has saved me thousands of dollars in studio time, optimizing the studio time for tasks best-suited to that atmosphere/expertise while doing the editing, comping, and simple tracking at home. The only low point of the box is a rather plasticky construction (on the front of the box) that seems just a bit flimsy compared with the solid capability of the unit. Overall, great buy.

I purcahsed an LE pro tools in 2001. It was great and worked fine for me. In August 08 I got a new computer and the LE would not work on it. In October I purchased the MBOX Pro. I have had it for 6 months have not not been able to use it yet. I have spent hundreds of dollars upgrading eveything in my new pc and it is always another thing. The techs at digi must use the absolute latest state of the art to test the new models and if you do not have what is required you will be out of luck .The techheads at the support act like you are from another planet when you ask any questions. Check the digi web site before you buy and check to see if your PC or Mac will work with pro tools.Or you may waste your money.

I bought the Mbox 2 Pro 6 months ago and have had a really tough time getting it to work correctly. I am new to recording, and am impatient when it comes to troubleshooting. If you share those traits I wouldn't recommend Pro Tools. Ask current users about the learning curve before you decide.

I purchased an MBox 2 Pro in January 2007 after reading many reviews and getting advice of friends. I have taken excellent care of it by unplugging it when it was not in use and using a surge suppression power strip.
Now it is completely dead and Digidesign "ProAxess" support will require $$$ fixed rate to repair it because it is out of warrenty.
While it worked, it was EXCELLENT. ProTools and the hardware were simple to use and provided excellent results.
I bought "the best", took meticulous care of it, and now have a dead brick. Also, the knobs are cheap and feel like they will break. I should have bought the MOTU Ultralight. It has similar performance and is more robust. I may save my $$$ and apply to that instead.

On my first voyage into the seas of recording, i purchased the M-Audio Firewire 1814 and ProTools M-Powered. I sat in front of my computer for days talking to the M-Audio techs on the phone, just trying to get this thing to work. My computer kept rejecting the hardware. Instead of passing the return days and getting stuck with the money, i returned it.
Then, with my fingers crossed, I bought the Digidesign MBox 2 Pro. It looked perfect for me, a beginner looking for something small to get me started in learning pro tools.
I bought the mbox 2 pro and within 30 minutes of opening the box i had it up and running with Pro Tools LE and i was recording my home made guitar and bass jams.
I was definently impressed with the ease of installation, considering digidesign is known to have problems working with certain computers.
This system is great for any beginner looking to learn the magic of pro tools recording software.
I just wish they would have slapped on 2 more XLR mic inputs. Its hard to get an o.k. drum sound with 2 mics.
But that aside, i strongly reccomend this. Just do plenty of research on digidesign.com to make sure its compatible with your computer.
