I can't believe the negative reviews this little guy is getting. I think this is a brilliant device. It has the exact features I need, and none else, really. It's solid, but very lightweight. It has nice Neutrik jacks. No phantom power, but I only record with a dynamic mic anyways, plus I have a tube pre for it which has its own phantom power - don't need it. I have powered speakers which I like to use in my home recording, and this has just the right ouput for them. I can also run lines out to stereo monitors. I like that it's USB 2.0, the new Macs aren't being made with FireWire ports anymore! You'll need to go USB eventually, it seems, so I've got a head start.
I have used the PreSonus Inspire firewire device quite extensively, and also had an M-Audio FireWire Solo. The Inspire is a great device for home recording, I recommend it overall if you want a firewire interface. I just happened to have beer poured into mine by my cat by accident. Oops. So, I tried the Solo, but it had too many quirks for me, and didn't sound as good. The E-Mu 0202 sounds as good or better to me, I'm very happy with the recordings so far. Also, the version of Ableton Live that it came with was upgradable through an offer which may or may not still be in effect. Basically, it gave me a $200 software package, for free. I can't complain about that!
Overall, I'm very glad I purchased this interface, its just what I need, sounds great, and is a total breeze to operate. Woo-hoo.

No simultaneous ASIO and WDM? *Sighhh*

I usually let my recording interface function as my main sound card as well, meaning that all sounds from all active programs are played through the speakers connected to my interface. Unfortunately, this isn't possible with the 0202. Buried deep down in the "troubleshooting" section of their documentation, E-MU nonchalantly mentions that the 0202 will NOT play back ASIO and WDM streams simultaneously. Ummmm... WHAT?! This means that, if I'm mixing a song and want to compare it to a reference track, I have to close my DAW, open the mp3 in an audio player (Windows Media Player, iTunes, QuickTime, etc...), listen to the mp3, close the mp3 player, then re-open the DAW. WHAT A PAIN! If you don't follow these steps, then you simply won't be able to listen to the mp3, period. Most other audio interfaces are completely capable of ASIO and WDM playback at the same time, so why can't this unit do it? This fact is NOT mentioned on the spec sheet, so beware! As a simple recording device it works just fine, but this ASIO-WDM issue is a major weak point!

I had read reveiws on both the 0404 and the 0202 and for just song-writing and ideas, it was money well spent. It took a few downloads to get it working with Vista on PC, but it was no big deal. I tried it with an SM-58 and an AT battery powered condenser mic (no phantom power, but for the cash, what do you want?) and got a crisp signal. The software package was an incredible deal. The Steinberg LE does not work with MIDI VSTs in Vista, but the Sonar trial does the trick. If you want to listen to the folks slamming this ADA for inputs or signal integrity, think about the cost. Again, it won't give you a finished, mastered studio CD, but for a quick fix for the home body, I was pleasantly surprised. If you want the big bucks sound, spend the big bucks.

Not a wise choice for home studio!

Well, let's start with the weird array of audio inputs that most will find useless - including the 1/8" TSR in. This is definitely designed for the home hobbyist and not the serious musician at all. The single UNBALANCED XLR input is non-powered (no phantom power) so condenser mics are out! Though it boasts "high fidelity" I was not impressed with the audio quality at all. Really a pointless unit unless you have a k-mart mic with a 1/4 ts jack hanging from it.
The software bundle is impressive and the install was easy... and this did work right out of the box! I can see this for a college radio or maybe a high school film class but NOT the home studio.
If you want a great USB recording interface buy the Tascam US122 or 144... way more bang for your buck!

It does the job. I don't have a lot to compare it to, but the sound quality seems good to me.
Cons:
* No phantom power - ie. can't run condenser mics without add-on power source
* Susceptible to interference, especially from cell phones
