The E-Mu 0404 PCI Digital Audio Recording System is a 24-bit/192kHz* PCI audio interface that delivers everything you need to record, mix, and play back audio on your PC with hardware-accelerated effects and soft mixing. It works with all major PC audio and sequencer applications offering faultless analog and digital I/O, pristine sound quality, and all the hardware-accelerated effects, mixing, and monitoring of E-MU's popular 1820M, 1820, and 1212M Digital Audio Systems.

I/O includes 1/4" analog, optical and coaxial S/PDIF, and MIDI. 24-bit/192kHz* A/D/A converters deliver an incredible 111dB (A/D) and 116dB (D/A) signal-to-noise ratio. E-DSP hardware acceleration taken from E-MU's more expensive systems gives you an effects processor that can deliver over 16 simultaneous hardware-accelerated effects. The E-DSP processor frees your computer from running CPU-intensive plug-ins to boost performance. It ships with over 500 effects presets with allowances to add more plug-ins to your system as needed.

E-DSP also provides zero-latency, hardware-based mixing and monitoring via the included PatchMix DSP mixer, so no external mixer is needed. The E-MU 0404 ships with ASIO 2.0 and WDM drivers, Steinberg Cubasis, Steinberg WaveLab Lite, SFX Machine LT, and a trial version of Minnetonka's diskWelder BRONZE.

The 0404 PCI ships with the Power FX software update, giving users the ability to run over 600 hardware-accelerated effects as VST plug-ins for Cubase and other applications. Power FX also introduces EMU's first expansion plug-in, with more reverb and delay effects.

*NOTE: 192kHz software available for FREE download from the E-MU website.

I bought this card for my personal studio 2 years ago. It takes some messing with to work properly. If you are not willing to do this get a line 6 or a tape recorder. For the rest of us who care about quality and hi-res recording we will stick with e-mu. I own and operate a computer business so ASIO drives and soundcard issues were not a problem. I can see were people of limited computer background would have an issue with this card. This card is chalk full of featues and options. If you are serious about getting a good solid sound and have a computer that is at least double the system req's, GET THIS CARD!!! E-mu has decades of experience and is now part of creative, which in my experience is the best computer sound card manufacture out there.

This is a snap to install and setup IF <-----> IFFFFF you read the instructions. If you are unable to do that don't buy it, it wont work. I installed it on a Vista box with the new drivers, it was a piece-o-cake. I had zero problems with the e-mu patchmix interface. The only thing I have had a problem with was WaveLab lite (part of the software bundle, you can google the vista issues to fix them, but you shouldnt have to, they shouldnt sell things that dont work) Very clear sound and recording, but I will say the wire harnesses look to be weak. If you want to use computer speakers be sure to buy the 1/4" Y splitter to 1/8 stereo add-on (It should have come with it since it is for a computer) I just plug it into my amp/s. All in all a good deal and everything you need to get started recording.

Horrible customer support and more...

The actual card seems ok and works good, the wires are flimsy/thin however. The software is awkward and not really worth considering when buying this card. The effects are just OK and their interface is not very good IMHO. After struggling with this card's software until I could at least use it with Live and Cubase I eventually got used to it a bit. Then the cables failed and a letter to EMU support brought a response in several days that did'nt address my issue. I offered to buy the connectors in order to replace the bad ones and after more than a year , still nothing but a form letter from support. A telephone call went unanswered as well. A good thing I changed my Brand or I would still be waiting...waiting. I resolved to NEVER buy EMU again and guess what? I could not even give this card away and donated it to salvation army in case someone had the wires but no card.

Stay away from this product! The E-MU 0404 PCI is just too much trouble for the average musician. I will never use any type of soundcard for recording after the suffering I encountered with unit.

I was new to recording when i got this and it was a bad decision. The software required for this thing is a huge pain. I don't know how they managed to make it so complicated. I highly recommend some hardware interface that uses usb or firewire over this. There are a few in this price range and they also record 24-bit but with real preamps and real knobs for the input levels! Its so incredibly annoying to go into a whole different program just to change your input gain. And whats with all the effects? The whole great thing about digital recording workflow is that you can go back and change anything! Who wants to put reverb on the signal going in! Thats what your recording application is for! All the stupid effects just make the card more complicated. By the time ya finally get the dumb card working with the weird software it needs and then get your recording app to recognize the weird software properly you've pretty much lost the inspiration to record stuff. I would definetally not recommend this. I think something like the PreSonus AudioBox is lite-years better at this price point.
