The E-MU 1616M Master Laptop CardBus Digital Audio System is among the most powerful and portable laptop audio systems ever created. It includes a PCMCIA card and compact MicroDock audio/MIDI interface and delivers the same powerful DSP effects, zero-latency monitoring and the same master-grade 24-bit/192kHz A/D/A converters used in Digidesign's Pro Tools HD 192 interface.

The PCMCIA card can be used alone for its DSP power and studio-quality headphone amp or plugged into the MicroDock for a total of 16 inputs and 16 outputs plus ADAT, S/PDIF, and MIDI I/O. Inputs include two custom preamps with Neutrik connectors, 48V phantom power, and an analog soft-limiting circuit for clip protection. System ships with ASIO2 and WDM drivers for Windows XP and 2000, as well as the Production Tools software bundle that includes E-MU's Proteus X LE, plus software by Steinberg, Ableton, IK Multimedia, and many more-everything you need to create, record, edit, master, and burn your music.

I bought this interface after a few days of research. The E-MU 1616m is one of the best audio interfaces you will find out the for under $1000. The quality is superb and clear. E-MU really did a good job on this product. The drivers are very stable and the converters are top notch. The preamps are nice and clean. There are many ins and outs on this interface; enough to keep you satisfied. I would recommend anyone to get this audio interface. Best value on the market!

It's Too Good To Be True!

Let me start by saying E-mu has done a fantastic job in putting everything I need into one tiny little box. BRAVO! Now all I need is for it to work. I've had this thing for six months using a an AMD k-6 @ 2ghz with 2 gig of ram running Cubase SX2. Every once in a while this nasty little puppy decides it wants to work for about two hours out of the week and when it does, its AMAZING! But normally it just freezes up my PC causing me to just fiddle around with my synths day-dreaming about what wonderfull music I COULD be recording if I had a working setup. Emu support is great in the way that they told me how to patch it up and even how to download the new drivers and reinstall them over and over again but to no avail. If only I had a majic wand...

EMU - The best.

This card is hands down amazing. I'll point out some things you may or may not find with other ifaces. If you go FW or USB you WILL NOT be able to loop WDM back into the system. For example: if you use a program that doesn't support ASIO and want to send the WDM audio into a program like Audition - you are SOL. With EMUs powerful mixer you can router any signal into WDM or ASIO. You can even send ASIO to WDM or vice versa. If you'd like to use the device with a desktop all you need is a PCMCIA PCI Adapter - 20 bucks and now you can use with your laptop or desktop system. One advantage of the 1616m over the 1820m is the feature of soft-limiters. No worries on over-clipping signals. I suggest reading the PDF on EMUs site for a good 30-45min. If you need something complex or something simple the EMU will cover you. I've tried the EMU 1820, 1616, M-Audio USB/FW cards (to many to list). This is the BEST I've used. The Sonar LE will get you by if you don't need anything fancy and just laying down analog audio and basic MIDI tracks. Do yourself a favor - check this out. Also in regards to the PCMCIA card being flimsy, EMU just sent me the latest version and it is a lot stiffer. The EMU 1616M also had a few little updates to the optical ports.

I have had one of these for about 6 months now.... and let me say that it's a dangerous little piece of gear.... best solution short of hammerfall cards I've found for the price.....and good luck finding something else for a notebook with this quality!! Bravo!

This Audio System is great! Plug a good mic into it, and play away. Amazing recording quality from this setup. The only beef I have is the PowerFX VST's. When insterted after recording, they seem to give a little extra noise(maby it's just me.) However, when using them in realtime, they are awesome. The PatchMIX is wonderful! It takes quite a bit of time to understand how it functions, and how to make it function the way you want...once you figure it out, it's simple, and powerful. The stand out feature: This is a GREAT setup for recording vocals! Add your PowerFX's(compressor, rev., exciter) before the send in PatchMIX, and sing away. Keep your settings loose, cause you can use inserts after recording to perfect the sound...anyway, hope something in here helps potential buyers out!
