COLOSSUS As the name implies, COLOSSUS is a massive, high-quality virtual instrument that covers all of the basic musical genres, the way a keyboard workstation attempts to, except COLOSSUS offers much higher quality instruments and dynamics. It provides you with a staggering 32GB of content and over 160 instruments to work with.

COLOSSUS is an indispensable tool you will reach for time and time again when nothing else works. It will become your Swiss army knife of composing, plus it's GM compatible! And you can expect the usual exceptional Quantum Leap quality in COLOSSUS. Even if you own some of these instruments, you will love this collection. A good example is the Fender Rhodes. Despite the fact the Rhodes has been sampled many times, COLOSSUS includes a unique vintage sounding Rhodes you won't find anywhere else. COLOSSUS includes 15GB of new sounds recorded at Ocean Way Studio B (24-bit), a new, 2GB piano recorded in Europe, and 15GB of instruments from the award-winning range of Quantum Leap and EASTWEST titles (EW/QL Symphonic Orchestra, EW Steinway B Piano, QL Stormdrum, QL Guitar and Bass, QL 56 Strat, QL Hardcore Bass, QL RA, QL Brass, QL Voices of the Apocalypse), all newly programmed with superior sound quality.

Programming is kept very simple, and programs that utilize the mod-wheel are labeled appropriately. All programs have CC11 asan additional volume control. Many programs utilize auto sample alternation for added realism.

For touring or studio musicians, COLOSSUS is an indespensible production tool that has incredible instruments of every type for song-writing, filmscoring, multi-media production, in the studio, or on the stage.

Worst money you can spend....

My friend owns this software, and I had been waiting for a LONG time to try it out. I thought it would be a great ROMpler like the Motif or maybe Triton series but MAN was I wrong. Cheesy sounds that could easily be made with any basic sampler. Drum kits? Again... bad, boring samples.

Buy a Motif or other workstation. I thought this would be "The one", but the realism is just not there. (For the record, I played with this for over 12 hours trying to like it... never happened)

Top Quality sounds, VST support only ok

First off, the selection and quality of sounds is incredible. I've found nothing else that can compare. Of course, there's the trade off in terms of computer performance. You pay for that quality in hard drive space and CPU hits, especially if the reverb is on (the reverbs, and there are many, are incredible. Easily the best I've heard.). But, no pain no gain. These are professional sounds, all the way.

So, get Goliath and start making some great music. It's very inspiring to use, and it's a lot of fun to hear the music in your head come out of the speakers exactly as you imagined it.

My only problem is that the VST plugin is slightly buggy in Reaper. It works, but it can be a hassle. Also, there are some instruments that don't load correctly. Very few, but they are there. Unfortunately for me one of those instruments was a Fender Rhodes I've been wanting to try. I haven't yet talked to Eastwest customer support, so I can't comment on that. Anyway, overall, I think Goliath is excellent.

Do The Math

The samples in this collection are huge sounding. Drum type things, booming type things, lots of large sounding samples designed to make a big impact. The problem with these programs is that they require a massive computer to run them. The required hardware on this one is 2 Gigs of ram and a Dual Core processor. But these sounds are only really good if you use them with other sounds, like Symphonic Orchestra. That program is even larger. Which can mean that in order to run them together you may require two or more computers running in tandum. There are other programs, such as Steinberg Symphonic Orchestra or IK Miroslav Orchestra and Choir that don't have as big a sound, but will run comfortably with far less memory. I own both of those, and I prefer them to EastWest.

Awesome samples...but worthless

Every now and then I can hear the samples when I play in "Play" the included soft synth and they're awesome. It just requires WAY TOO much system resources. Don't waste your money on this. For all practical purposes, GOLIATH is NOT polyphonic. Once you start using five notes/samples at a time, the hiccups don't stop...
