With the Electro-Harmonix 12AY7 Tube Microphone Preamp, Electro-Harmonix offers an affordable tube micrphone preamp that won't disappoint. The 12AY7 Mic Preamp's special FET current-balancing circuit allows the tubes to amplify the microphone signal to line level while eliminating noise and protecting against hum and hostile electrical environments. It has an extra TRS output for separate line control, which can be used as a splitter or an aux send for monitoring. Input connections are balanced in and out (XLR) with a 1/4" TRS balanced buffer out. The Electro-Harmonix mic pre unit also boasts a phase reverse switch and a +4dBm indicator light for setting optimal mic level. The 48V phantom power is soft starting and pop-free.

My Acoustic guitars shine through this thing

I did much research before buying this preamp, This is my first preamp that is not a starved plate design. The thing just arrived so I plugged it in to my SM81 and grabbed my taylor and started strumming some stuff. I had an acoustic test project saved that I was using to test acoustic guitars on my ART Tube MP and the difference is astounding. I was using a dual mic setup with the ART (SDC SM81 at 14th fret and a LDC AKG Perception 200 at ear level overlooking the guitar) and all I did the the EH was use a single SDC and just double the track and delay the second track by a couple MS. and WOW! single mic beats the dual mic setup by leaps and bounds with the EH!!!! Buy this if you record acoustics and you will not regret it!!!

I'm a long time studio owner and own some really nice mic pre's out there..Pre's like apogee's Trak2 & Ensemble as well as Focusrite's ISA428...I own Api luchbox preamps as well as pre's by osa / Purple audio...

This EHX is THE Best pre I have when using on an acoustic guitar....PERIOD.....

It does something to acoustic guitars that no other pre in my collection does...I cant pinpoint it but if you put it next to the other pre's it's not even close...And that's saying something...

Only thing about this pre is that it doesnt have much gain...What I suggest is using an external compressor to use as extra gain for this pre...

Also if you're going to run a guitar cable into this use a di! That way you're getting all the tube pre goodnes....

It's a great "cheap" mic pre...Works really well as room mic pre's also....

Needs Balanced to Unbalanced Conversion

This unit puts out a balanced signal from the XLR output. If you're using a consumer soundcard like I am, you'll need to convert the output signal to unbalanced. I had to buy a "Line Level Shifter" from EBtech to get rid of the loudish hum people talk about. I too thought the thing was defective. It's not. It just requires above listed conversion. Best preamp in its price range, if you're looking for a "vintage" tube tone. I use this thing on everything.

I recently purchased one of these preamps. I plugged it in and had recorded some simple riffs to test the quality I could get. Well, my 12AY7 came defective. It had a major problem with a loud hum no matter where it was and what I had plugged in. When I listened to the sound quality it would give me without taking the hum into account, I was pretty amazed. This thing works perfectly with a Shure SM57 or SM58, you won't believe how good your mic can sound.
