With the Electro-Voice SB122, the quest for a compact, lightweight, powerful, and affordable subwoofer is finally over. The SB122 is possibly the smallest, most powerful subwoofer on the planet. It packs 400-watt continuous—and 1,600-watt peak-power handling into a compact 33 lb. package. It also employs the new EVS12SB 12", long-excursion woofer for outstanding low-frequency response.

Aesthetically, the SB122 sports a half-face grille with grille cloth, and a stylized EV logo. The rich feature set includes a top-mounted pole cup, ergonomic carrying handle, large port, and a built-in low-pass filter that eliminates the need for external processing. Of course, external processing is still an option for professionals seeking greater overall system performance gains. And, with a price that makes it all seem too good to be true, SB122 is sure to make you rethink what a compact sub can be.

The Electro-Voice SB122 bass module is a very compact, lightweight subwoofer system that is designed to add bass enhancement to EV Sx and Zx Series speaker systems. The SB122 combines the advantages of a long-throw 12" woofer with a strong, lightweight composite enclosure. The large vent provides less vent compression and turbulence for increased low frequency output. The EVS12SB cast frame transducer created for the SB122 uses the same motor and suspension design as the EVS18S used in EV's larger systems. With nearly 2" of peak-to-peak excursion capability, this is literally a 12" with the heart of an 18".

An integral low-pass filter allows the SB122 to be directly connected in parallel with a full-range speaker for truly impressive low-end output without the need for an additional amplifier and processor. The filter is transparent below 160Hz, allowing the SB122 to be used as an independent subwoofer in bi-amp applications without the need to disable the internal filter. For maximum output in bi-amp applications and protection of the full-range system when running in parallel, a 40Hz Hi-pass (subsonic) filter is recommended. The SB122 features a convenient pole-mount socket on top of the enclosure to allow a small full-range speaker such as the Zx1 or Sx80 to be mounted on the optional ASP-1 accessory pole, resulting in a compact system than sounds much bigger than it looks.

Little Train that Could

How much easier could it be? 35 pounds each,,carry one in each hand and sling them around with ease. Pole mounts on top for the smaller mains or stand alone as your subs. 400 watts RMS won't fill an arena but will do fine for the smaller to med size gigs with a LOT less wear and tear on your back. They'd also do well as a compact bas rig setup. 2 on each side of a band should thump just fine. Crossed over a little high for me (160hz) but if you have an external x-over, set them up for around 100hz or so.

I own four of these that I drive with a Crown XTI4000. I was working outdoors at a fair ground a ocuple of years ago and people kept coming up to me asking where teh array of 18" subs was. They couldn't believe that four of these little subs were cranking out that much bass. I also love that you can easily carry one in each hand.

Great mobile low end

Every working band would love to have massive earth shaking bass cabs. But after a years of hauling around a pair of old-school 2x18 cabs and running them on 25% volume, we downsized and couldn't be happier. For just about any local venue a set of these adds plenty of kick and clean bass. I also use them for acoustic shows and it makes all the difference in the world.

For the band we bi-amp them with a set of SX-500+ EV mains, but have recently started just using a set of 15" EV Eliminator Monitors for mains instead, saving the big speakers and subs for outdoor/large venue shows. It sounds small, but we are a loud rock band, (probably too loud sometimes) and for your average club or bar show this setup gives us plenty of volume and headroom.

We use a QSC PLX 3402 (900+ watts/channel at 4 ohms)with one side for mains with the 100hz high pass filter on so most of the the bass and kick aren't going through the mains keeping them crystal clear for vox, and the other channel for the subs with full range... using the built in crossovers in the SB122s. Very simple to move and set up and it sounds great.

And the best part is it all easily fits in the back of my Pathfinder, with room for a Marshall half-stack and guitars to spare. And when the show's over you can easily grab a SB122 like a carry-on bag in each hand and walk out the door.

You can't go wrong with EV. If you like mid-rangy mud in lead-lined cabinets get JBL.. (Peavey with a price tag if you ask me.) Otherwise, go electro. You won't regret it.
