The Electro-Voice SB2A is a dual-channel powered 12" subwoofer that eliminates the need for external system processing and amplification, and addresses the demand for lightweight, high-performance, portable sound systems. The SB2A features dual, 350-watt amplifiers, and switchable, powered speaker output that can drive either an external, eight-Ohm, passive subwoofer or full-range loudspeaker. The SB2A is a supremely versatile and compact "sub system drive" solution that can easily be configured with a variety of loudspeakers for a multitude of sound reinforcement applications.

The SB2A can function in many different set-ups: with a ZX1-90; as a standalone PA that fits in the front seat of your car; in clusters with SX100/300; with a passive SB122; as a lightweight sub extension replacement for bulky, 15" two-way systems (two 16 kg packages vs. one 40 kg package); or with an additional powered top box (such as the SXA100+).

The SB2A shares the same durable, injection-molded enclosure as the popular, passive, EV SB122 subwoofer. Both utilize the EV S12S woofer, designed from the ground up for optimized performance within this small footprint enclosure.

Combining the amazing low-frequency performance of an Electro-Voice SB122 passive subwoofer with dual high-efficiency 350-watt amplifier channels and a dedicated electronic crossover/processor, the SB2A eliminates the need for a separate amplifier and crossover to drive a full-range system. The second amplifier channel has a switchable high pass filter to allow either a passive full-range system (Zx1, Sx300) or passive subwoofer (SB122) to be connected via the Neutrik NL4 output. A line level XLR output is also provided for daisy-chaining to powered speakers or additional power amps. The SB2A signal processing provides a carefully tuned overlap to help round out the lower mids of the full-range system, creating a big full sound from a very small package. Like the SB122, the SB2A features a convenient pole-mount socket on top of the enclosure to allow a small full-range speaker like the Zx1 or Sx80 to be mounted on the optional ASP-1 accessory pole. The result is a compact, self-contained 3-way bi-amp system that sounds much bigger than it looks.

Surpassed my expectations

I had recently been looking for a light-weight, yet effective sub to replace my first-generation JBL EON Sub. I'd noticed the EON "blatting" on occasion when attempting to reproduce acoustic bass patches from my synth. Also, I'd never been too happy with the definition of the low frequencies that the EON produced. So, I figured I'd do a search of some of the newer, powered subs.

What attracted me to the EV SB2A initially was its weight! I think it runs about 35 lbs. Of course most of the other current crop of powered 15-18" subs are in the 75 to 180 pound category. Portability was definitely a prime consideration as all of us in my band are in the 59-69 age range. But, I was skeptical about a 12" sub being able to do the job. However, knowing how easy Musician's Friend makes it to return items, I figured that if the EV SB2A didn't work for us, I'd simply send it back.

I'll cut to the chase: After waiting through a couple of back-order cycles, the unit finally arrived just as I was heading out to a rehearsal. I grabbed the box off the front step, loaded it into my van (wow, this is light!) and drove to the ballroom. (This dance venue is a mid-sized ballroom, much larger than your average night club.) I set the SB2A up in lieu of the EON, and it worked perfectly. I didn't even have to change the position of the level control (it defaults to a center position.) The bottom end was tight and defined. I fired up the MIDI sequences with the acoustic bass that had overtaxed the EON - perfect playback on the EV! My first thoughts were that I now had to order the passive version (SB122) to run as a slave to the SB2A for some of our larger venues and outdoor gigs.

The EV SB2A does have several I/O options on the back such as line out, a powered out (for the SB122) and, of course, a line in. One thing that the first-generation, powered JBL EONs (EON10, EON15 and EON-Sub) had were male & female IEC AC power input/output connectors that are lacking on, not only the newer-generation EONs, but also powered Mackies (SMR350s/450s) and this EV SB2A. These power outputs made it so easy to cascade a group of powered speakers by connecting the power out of one to the power in of the next, etc. This alleviated the need to run a series of extension cords from each powered speaker. I would put this feature on my wish list for the next generation of the EV SB2A.

I guess there isn't a whole lot more to say about this unit other than it simply does the job. The EV SB2A is definitely a five-star product for anyone who plays small to medium venues, wants clear powerful bass and doesn't want to throw out their back during set-up and tear-down.
