The best choice

We've owned the D2424LV for about 4 years and it has become the main recording device in our home studio. We purchased it with the optional Ethernet card and run a firewire cable to our computer. With a simple FTP computer program (we use Ipswitch FTP Pro), the recorded .wav files can easily be dragged and dropped into Cubase. They all position correctly and occupy separate tracks which makes editing and mixing a breeze. Fostex should, however, modify the unit to make filetransfer a little easier to accomplish for those not sophisticated with computers. The unit records like a 24 track tape recorder and we didn't find the instructions too complicated. Like anything it takes a little experimentation but when you discover all of the features, it's well worth the cost. We have the unit wired to a patch bay that runs 24 line outputs and inputs back and forth between the Fostex and our Soundcraft Ghost mixing console for recording and monitoring. Once recorded, everything gets dropped into the computer for editing and mastering. The only way to go. No computer latency and glitchless recording performance makes this, so far, the best recording system we've used.

I am very happy with the D2424LV. I am running this unit 24 in 24 out to a Allen & Heath 24-16-16-2 analog desk and my recordings are killer! 100% for this machine. I get around easy with transferring tracks to Pro Tools. I have hooked up my machine via MIDI to my 002R, sending MTC to Pro Tools. Then I dump the first 16 tracks and then the final 8 tracks in perfect sync. I searched for ages looking for the right recording device for my studio, and the D2424LV takes it all, hands down. Excellent Fostex - thanks!

Great if you can export tracks ok

I have owned this unit for 5 years, and I still haven't even begun to touch all the features it offers. The biggest plus is its reliability and almost glitch-free performance. The other great advantage is the quality of the AD converters. The biggest drawback is exporting the tracks to your DAW. The second downer is trying to figure out how to use it by reading the complex manual. What I did was buy an RME Hammerfall DSP Digiface to export tracks, and that makes everything a snap. It really requires an interface of this type to be at all practical. Factor in the extra cost for this type of digital interface. Highly recommended if you do a combination of live and studio recording with it.

Fantastic Machine!

I have had this machine for a few months now, and I love it for what I do. FANTASTIC SOUND QUALITY, and the 24ins and outs are a true GOD-SEND!! I hook the ins into the back of a patchbay, and use the sub-groups or aux sends on my mixer to route that direction, and then all 24 outputs of the recorder run into the back of another mixer. There may be easier ways to do that, but that seems to give me the best results. Some people complain of not having an effecient means of data transfer from machine to computer, but I don't exactly have that issue. I simply playback the recording through the second mixer,(either track by track or the intire mix) know what needs to be mixed further, and then the outputs of that mixer either run to a Firwire interface and into my computer, or just directly to another fostex recorder (the MR-8HD) which via usb, the WAV files can then be extracted. Either way works for me. Still a bit tangled and seeminly "go all the way around the world to get the same result" but it beats the hell out of sitting around twiddling my thumbs all day for the machine to transfer to my computer. My way of doing things works for me. The manual is... raw. The information is ALL there, but its not glamorous in any way, and without any prior knowledge of Fostex machines, it could potentialy be a real hassel. I'm of the mind that good-quality hardware recordings (such as this) sound WORLDS over better than software based recordings. And this thing only proves that statement for me.
