This is a neat little package and is useful for somone who's part of a music community: some of my friends have brilliant ideas/musicianship but are too poor to afford a computer. One problem with the one I bought is changing speed. The internal motor is connected before the regulator chip so has to work at whatever the power plug gives out: 18 - 22 volts. A way round the speed change problem is to run it off a 12 volt stabilised supply. This must be positive pin, otherwise the machine will be damaged. This issue only seems to affect later manufactured examples and I'm a bit puzzled why Fostex didn't notice it.

I have had this little gem since 1999 when I bought it for my first recorder in 6th grade. While it's not the best for professional recording, it makes an excellent back up copy of digital recordings, live shows or just to get some ideas on tape for a rough version. Since I play solo I can record backup vocals and band parts onto it so it will seem like I have a full band at live shows. This thing is really worth the cost

I love this recorder. I have it linked with a Behringer MX602A 4 channel board, a Zoom MRT3 drum machine, and a Zoom RFX300 effects unit. Yes, it only cuts one track at a time, but listen. I cut drums, bass, two guitars on 4 tracks with whatever EQ and effects I want, mix it up to a 2 track stereo cassette deck, THEN, take that cassette and put it into the X12, and have my stereo mix, and can add another 2 tracks, and keep going up & down until I have what I want to make the final stereo mix to my master 2 track deck. Then I use Xitel Inport Deluxe hardware/software to digitize the cassette recording to my laptop, then burn it to CD. Perfect! The X12 is sturdily made and has a very solid tape drive.

This is kind of a waste of money unless you're, A) obsessed with the idea of recording on tape, or B) a moron who can't use a computer. This does the bare minimum, and nothing more. Plus, whenever you punch in and out it leaves a nasty little squeak on tape that makes it a real pain to record vocal tracks in multiple parts. There is no reason to get this when you could download Audacity for free, which has more features. But if you really want to record on tape, try to get something used that has more features. This is okay for recording demos if you're a solo artist, I suppose, but recording a band is impossible.

ive had this for maybe 6 months now. i am now recording my bands first demo on it. and right off the bat, i thought this thing was pretty nifty. when attached to my mixer, it makes professional sounding recordings. but, you do need to know how to control the level meter. it took me a while to figure out how to get a good loud sound, and still be under 6db or whatever. in all, for the price, this thing is amazing, and would recommend it to anyone who doesnt have much money, and who wants to put some sounds down.
