I was really excited to get this, but when I finally set it up and tried it, the results were underwhelming.
- Acoustic guitar with microphone is muddy bass-heavy
- Acoustic/Electric guitar through jack is inaudible
- It's a little annoying trying to set up the microphone gain going back and forth with the computer.
- Microphone screen rattles back and forth
+ The playback function is nice. I anticipate that will be handy for working out leads
- Auto-record sensitivity and automatic track ending are worthless and tend to cut songs in half even when time between tracks is maxed out.
+ recorded quality from the amp line out is good.

I won this from Line 6 as a contest winner. I really wasn't expecting much, but when I got it I used it to record a band I was playing with. I just set in my guitar case in the middle of the room and let it run. WOW! The recordings were really good quality. I would take it home and make a CD of the complete songs and problem areas and give it to everyone to listen to. It was a surprise to everyone how well it recorded. We used 3 electric guitars, bass, keyboard, drums and vocals. It wasn't a perfect mix, but the overall recording was really good to work with. We recorded some acoustic stuff, also and it was great.
The only real issue with this thing is that it needs to run through a computer and you have to spend a little time sorting through the junk to get to the good stuff. However, once you use it a few times, that gets easier. Bigger files equal longer songs. We also had a list of the order of songs we rehearsed so I knew what was next in the list to look for.
I probably wouldn't have bought this, but now that I have it, I would buy another one if it broke, just for the size and recording convenience and quality.

I've owned two Backtracks, One failed and was replaced under warranty, the replacement failed after short time of use out of warranty.
The Backtrack is complicated to operate, the labeling rubs off, lots of buttons, coded flashing colors. all those things can be lived with by someone who reads the manual often.
My two were unstable, parts seem to not be available to consumers, repair seems not practical or easy.
If you are in the market for a recording device and like the description of the Line6 Backtrack . I would say buy the Backtrack only if you can afford to replace it later with another brand of recorder without hardship or too much annoyance. But if you are on a “shoestring” so to speak. I recommend you save your money till you can afford to buy one of the other brands of recorders that are offered by Music retailers, ( prices seem to be coming down) I lost my money, and a lot of time fooling with the Backtrack.. Buying the cheapest is not always the best value. Ouch!

This is great except for one small issue. The Backtrack would be amazing if it also had an always on feature. Some of our songs start out very soft and the recorder will not start recording until the drums kick in. Other than that, it makes great recordings. We record everyone of our practices now and can now study the areas where we need work. It is also great for recording solo acoustic demos. I have a ton of those tht I have recorded and put on my iPod so I can figure out what to do with them. Overall this thing is great. I would buy another in a second.

Finally a product that does exactly what was promised. No oversell.....no undersell! I won't restate all the positives that are in all the other reviews, but there is one thing of importance that seems to be understated. I've always had difficulty EASILY recording a clean signal while playing with a "normal" setup (with effects, etc.) NO MORE! Put the backtrack in line before your stomp boxes/effects and play! Then import the raw signal from your pod to your DAW and you're ready to go. And yes, the quality of the recording really is THAT GOOD! HECK, I almost feel like I'm wasting my time here...just read the ad!
