The Line-6 Backtrack is five star as far as simplicity. It was originally intended to record guitar riffs directly plugged into the unit. This unit also works recording a mixer output directly from the line out of a mixer. The unit does not have a record level meter but the wav files it produces can be run through sound editing software and everyone is happy. The only drawback is the unit is a little noisy with low amplitude recordings. The signal to noise ratio is acceptable though. When the next model comes out my cash will go there as well.

I got this product for Christmas. Although there is a more expensive version of this thing, I am very happy with the recorder. Line 6's other version gives you a headphone jack and an outside mic. You can deceide for yourself if you need the extra features. I can say that this thing works like a charm. I am always plugged into it and it has preserved some cool stuff that would have been lost otherwise. I use it when practicing, I put it on my pedalboard for rehearsing and use it between my guitar and my Tascam Guitar Trainer. I therefore don't need the headphone jack since I playback through the amp or the trainer. It works awesome just like the company claims. This thing is idiot-proof. You plug it into your USB and begin by adjusting the recording quality level (better fidelity=less recording time) and how many seconds you want the machine to wait between ideas. Any time there is a gap the licks you play will go into a different file. If you play something great, hit the "mark" button and it goes into a special folder for the good stuff. You edit the folders on your computer and save them like any other music file. This thing is a great value considering how much those Zoom and Tascam recorders are. True, the Line 6 has few features but it was made to be a simple-to-use inspiration insurance device and that is what it does. I am very happy with the features. The only negative is that it seems fragile, if you drop it or abuse it I doubt it would work. Its like a practice amp or a guitar trainer or any other piece of wonderful, cool, useful, piece of foreign made plastic that we musicians love and use. I imagine it will work great for about two years and then die. Still, for the price this thing is lovely. I also don't see why a headphone jack was not included on this model. Nevertheless, I Highly recommend the Backtrak!!
