A Must Have for Home Studios

I bought this about 6 months ago and I only wish I had bought it sooner. I use it as the sound card for my PC and I get amazing sounds from this unit. As a musician / songwriter and home recording enthusiist I can tell you that if anyone says the tones are awful, their problem lies somewhere between their keyboard and their chair. Or maybe they're are using the speakers that came in the box with their PC. I have all the model packs and I'm completely impressed with the performance of the UX-1. I've played guitar and keys for 30 years, even recorded at Ardent Studios, and I've learned more in the last 6 months than I could have ever learned without it. With the addition of Pod Farm, it's even more amazing. I play everthing from classical to TOOL and this thing has tones for every taste. Bottom line - buy this, get Pod Farm and you won't regret it.

Excellent for what it does

This was recommended to me at a local store while I was looking for a USB interface. And it's a damn useful piece of kit, if you set things up right. Don't mess around with your soundcard or PC speakers - plug the output into a pair of monitors or perhaps a good quality hi-fi. This thing can replace your PCs soundcard and sounds damn nice too. The included gearbox software is pretty good too, offers lots of amp and FX models. The sounds are not awe-inspiring and sound a little brittle, as a digital only sound source is bound to do, but for the money, it's pretty impressive. The pre-amp is decent enough. With a decent LDC mic the sound is warm and clean. Overall this product is excellent for home recording of ideas or whole songs, and in conjunction with decent recording software (try REAPER) and some free VST plugins can make pretty impressive sounding demos.

I like this product. If you want somthing that will get your ideas down for a cheap price, this is your product. I would not recommend it for pro recording, but it is nice to be able to record all your ideas easily. Its also pretty fun to mess around with

Does What It Says

I Bought a line 6 UX1 as I needed a decent mic input to my XP laptop. What's the fuss about hearing playback? I just jacked my powered PC speakers into the UX1 headphone output, told the computer to use the toneport drivers, told my recording software (sony acid) the same, and away I went. I leave hooked to the laptop and it has become my defacto soundcard du jour. No latency, easy volume matches, works seamlessly with Cakewalk and Acid with a bunch of tones and effects. It's great fun to make my ovation ukulele sound metal. This is perfect for a home studio

Interface works (sort of) but sounds are awful

In order to hear what you're playing you'll need to run a cable out from the toneport to the input of your soundcard and then set your souncard to play line in sound. Funky, but it works. But the sounds that come with the Gearbox software (including the tons you can download) are embarrasingly bad and sound very little like any of the guitarist's names they're labeled with. I spent a couple hours trying sounds and trying to adjust effects to make them sound decent. Nothing worked. I know Line 6 makes some good sounding stomp boxes, but the computer sounds are really useless.
