A compact and intuitive interface for your computer-based recording studio. |
The M-Audio Fast Track Pro Mobile USB Audio/MIDI Interface is loaded with professional features for optimal mobile recording flexibility. You get 2 front-panel mic/line inputs complete with phantom power for condenser microphones, inserts for outboard effects, balanced and unbalanced analog outputs, S/PDIF digital I/O, MIDI I/O, and more. The Fast Track Pro also features near-zero latency direct hardware monitoring and low-latency ASIO software monitoring, plus an A/B source switch and dual output pairs for DJ-style cueing. Compatible with most popular PC and Mac music software. USB connection and bus power along with class compliancy for Mac OS X* make it a breeze to set up.
Professional Recording-Anywhere, Anytime
With the Fast Track Pro, you'll get professional results whenever and wherever you want to record. A single USB connection gives you access to all the I/O you need for microphones and instruments like guitars, as well as MIDI- and S/PDIF-equipped digital audio gear. The microphone inputs are even phantom powered to accommodate the studio-quality condenser microphones. M-Audio's acclaimed driver software gives you total routing control over the 4 x 4 I/O-including setting up an effects loop with external devices.
Monitoring Flexibility
The Fast Track Pro audio interface features a powerful headphone amplifier with volume control. Hardware direct monitoring eliminates the latency or delay inherent in even the best internal circuitry while listening to your input and existing tracks. You can also listen to your input complete with effects while recording by using the low-latency ASIO monitoring. Connect to a DJ mixer with the two pairs of analog outputs and use the front-panel A/B source switch to audition cues.
Ableton Live Lite
Also included in the pack is the multi-award winning Ableton Live 4 software. The Live 4's revolutionary loop-based paradigm dramatically simplifies production so you can drag and drop audio clips in real time, record linear tracks, add effects, perform live remixes and much more.

Could be better...

For that amount of money, it surely could be better, but works just fine with Pro Tools M-Powered 7.4. No problems at all, except when I am using my headphones directly from FT Pro with monitors turned off, when I switch to monitors (turn them on, and the volume up, headphones volume down) it just stops working, so I have to close the session and restart the interface. If you're a fan of M-Audio products, and plan to buy it - don't. M-Audio should be soon releasing an updated version of the interface. Wait and buy it instead.

Perfect Piece of Junk

Great features but they all perform below subpar- that is, slightly above File 13 and right below useless. It looks sophisticated in the studio like faux electronics in furniture stores. I am an engineer and needed simplicity. What I got was a week long latency migrane. I kid you not- five days. The latency problem is nothing short of your worst DAW recording nightmare. Been on the phone with every hardware and software vendor-- even tried custom ASIO drivers- nothing worked. The only way around the latency is installing 2009 M-Audio FT Pro drivers. Now I get absolute great latency values at a killer 25 ms minimum! I need 7 ms maximum on the input and output buffers. Like G. H Bush said, "Not gonna do it." The problem is you can get rid of the pops and cracks but you cannot reduce the latecy value enough to rid yourself of the delay in your DAW when your kit, bass, guitar, violin, etc. registers on the VU's in your host software. Ran it through an XPS Studio, Sony Vaio, Acer Ferrari and it bombed out on all three. I run Ableton Suite, Battery and Traktor plus all vintage gear except for the M-Audio control surfaces. The Neutrik ins are cheap, gain is terrible but the PAD works great. Spend your bucks on a dedicated *high-speed 2.0 USB* interface...that's the avenue to take when you're limited to USB. And make sure it's USB *2.0.* I lay you odds the M Audio FT Pro is USB v1.1. Here's the good news; It works absolutely fantastic as an external sound card. Just don't think you can run anything *into* it with success. So save your pennies, do your homework and check into Alesis, Mackie, and TC Electronics USB interfaces.

Well... It Certainly Interfaces

Have you ever come out of a movie that was neither good nor bad? It was just sort of... a movie? That's about the best way to describe the M-Audio Fast Track Pro. It's an interface device. Don't expect it to blow you away. You shouldn't have to think about the performance of your interface. It simply allows you to record audio to your computer and that's it. This isn't the case with the FTPro. You'll be fanangling with it as much as you're messing with levels and mixes. Whether recording or in the playback, you'll be reminded you were using the FTPro. The white noise on the FTPro is still less than the interference I used to get with my little Alesis USB mixer. There is a sort of crackling noise in the recording. No matter how much you tweak, you won't get rid of it. It isn't so terrible that the audio is ruined. I'd say it's hardly noticeable when listening back to what you recorded. But when you know it's there and you're listening for it, you'll hear it. It's annoying. The Mic/Inst ports are fragile for instrument cables. You'll want a High Z to XLR adapter and plug it in as though you're plugging in a mic. That will help sustain the lifespan of the unit, but it doesn't solve the crackling sound problems. Your headphones will never be loud enough. The FTPro simply doesn't put out enough volume. Input is fine. Output, not so much. There are plenty of features to praise the unit for. The phantom power feature is a major plus for the condenser mic users. And the portability is great. It's easy to pack and go, and pull out and set up. But between recording on location or being in a studio where I've got better equipment, my audio is much clearer in the studio. If you plan on purchasing this device because you want a quality interface, this isn't it. The FTPro does the job, and for the time being, I'll continue using it on the go. Otherwise, it's just an interface. I suppose that's a compliment.

This thing is a great little piece of equipment to start your home studio with, I use this little thing all the time. I run my MIDI keyboard through it and my guitar, and both work great. I am using a MacBook with Leopard and Garage Band. This little thing is absolutely great for the price, do not hesitate.

Beware XP SP3 and Vista Sp1 Users

It's totally unfortunate that M-audio has some of the worst customer support and tech support of any audio company out there otherwise this little box would be exactly what I need. If you are on Vista or have SP3 for XP beware.. The driver is badly optimized and I have constant latency issues with it. My computer is a dual core 1.73ghz, 4 gb ram laptop and with this particular interface I can barely run 8 channels of audio in ableton with two effects per channel (simple things like compressors) without crackling. Furthermore, you can't have two programs open that process sound (for example a media player and Ableton) or you will get errors about how the sample rate is not supported by the sound card... If you don't believe me check out the 9 page thread on the m-audio forum that has been open since September of last year (no actual solution has been developed by m-audio). Again this little box is exactly what I want and it's unfortunate that their drivers are so awful but as soon as I find a new interface this will be getting shipped back...
