Ordered the 1814 as the deal of the day last week. It is my first audio interface. I am a trumpet player just getting into the realm of recording. I researched the product a lot before I bought it. A few tips are, if you need to purchase a firewire card, make sure you get one with the Texas Instruments chipset, as it is the most compatible. If you have Windows Media Centre Edition, you should think about upgrading to XP Home or Pro. Also, before first connecting the device, go to M-Audios website and get the latest drivers. I followed these tips, and everything works like a charm on my PC. I have a P4, 2.5 GB Ram, and XP Pro SP3. The firewire card I purchased is a Siig NN-440012-S8. Good luck!

I bought this unit new a long while back. I STRUGGLED to get my guitar recordings to sound good. After I bought this I replaced my speaker cab, my mics, my cables, all of my amp emulation gear, tearing my hair out to get a sound tat wasn't horrible. Turned out that it was that AD Converters that sounded bad. Once I started using the S/PDIF connector from my mic pre or guitar pre to the 1814 the sound improved remarkably.

I bought this unit to replace my AP192. I have not been disappointed. The ADAT is big plus for me. This allows me to connect another Non-Protools supported device and use it with ProTools. So with the inputs of the 1814 and the other Device, I have an abundance of options for routing and recording.

The quality of the Mic inputs could stand to be cleaner. But the unit is built solidly. I have never had any issues with drivers or installation of any of the m-audio products and the 1814 is no exception.

I've owned many Maudio products over the years but they have lost my business. Many of us semi-pro working our way to Pro studios come to need a portable unit. Most of us that have been doing this for some time have learned our Windows Lessons and moved onto things that work better like Mac's.

Bottom Line - if you have a Mac running Leopard there are only beta drivers out and they will most likely cause your Mac to crash after boot if the unit is attached and on. I have been in contact with Maudio support and development promised final drivers to be delivered mid-March. Ha ha ha, I guess an early April fool's joke. Don't even try to use this on a Mac Pro.

P.S. - The unit boasts good features for the money but most stink or don't work. Sound quality, Stability, and Performance are paramount in our work and the 1814 lacks in every area. It can be an appealing package for the money but even for mobile use it's really flaky... just simply a waste of money.

I bought this interface to use with Pro Tools M-Powered. This is a great way to get a powerful Pro-Tools setup at a low price. This interface matched with Pro-Tools M-Powered is similar to a Digi-002 Rack.

I use this interface to record all kinds of bands. The 8 analog inputs are very useful when recording drums and other input demanding sessions. The expandability with the adat input is huge plus. I plan on getting preamps (such as Presonus's Digimax) with an adat output to expand my analog inputs to 16. You won't find another interface with this much expandability and this many features at this price, especially, the possibility of using Pro-Tools.
