Great when it works (repeated driver failures)

I've had my M-Audio FireWire 410 for about a year and a half so I can use Reason when I play keyboards at my church. When it works, it's great. However, the drivers fail periodically: I connect everything and then the drivers simply fail to load when I boot my laptop. When this occurs, I have to uninstall and re-install the drivers. Today, I had to re-install the drivers 3 times because it didn't take the first two times. This is so frustrating that I'm starting to shop for a new interface.

only IRQ problems and blue screen crash

I've own this machine for 2 years, and never got to use all the advertised specs, because the machine never really work. Lets say, the only way to make it work in my good quality PC or in my laptop is to reduce to 44Hz, whats pretty devastating when composing bass oriented music. The support is weak, to say the best of. All I get from the beggining is a supposed to be IRQ conflict, and very often blue screen crashes (yes, the blues survived..), due to firewire device connection problems. I've already to change my PCI external Firewire card to one of recommended by m-audio, useless.. And so on, and so on. With this card Im expending most of my time and energy with problems, instead with music... sad... Very expensive card to use only in 44Hz with eventual crashes...

I have had this unit over a year. I have had NO problems with Vista on my laptop or my PC. I move it almost every weekend and it has taken a beating, still with no problems. I use Sonar 7 Producer and the only glitch I have is: if you touch the small end of my firewire while plugged into my laptop, it defaults to the laptops sound card. I then have to re-asign the device in Sonar. I wish I had bought the one with more inputs, I love this unit.

Excellent product with regards to home recording. Great quality sound and days of latency issues with soundblasters etc are now gone.

Only buy this if you have XP, don't waste your time and money if you have Vista 32-bit version (it will not work properly, no matter what anyone from M-audio tells you, just google it to see for yourself).

Would have scored this 5 all round if it wasn't for the price, sensitivity of the device and driver problems.

Price is a bit high when compared to other m-audio products that do roughly the same thing for cheaper (pre-usb/audiophile). There are a few differences but they do not reflect the price.

Customer service is also very poor. Mine took 6 months to be returned from M-audio for repair and also cost me. Extremely delicate machine as well, so home-recording only. Although mobile recording is possible you may end up with it needing repaired from simply hotswapping it by accident (loose connection etc) at great cost and stress.

Conclusion - worth it if you only use XP and don't plan on moving it around to much. Don't use any usb to firewire convertors or you will fry it for sure.

I bought this about a year ago. I had a little trouble getting the drivers to work, but since then, no problems. I use it with my band's recording and it works great. sounds clear and no delay.
