Quality audio capture for field recording or songwriting made easier.
What are the main things plaguing professional field recording? Wild levels, poor mics, and limited storage. The redesigned MicroTrack II solves all that with an extended input gain range for capturing quiet sounds, an analog input limiter to tame unexpected bursts of sound, 48V phantom power for pro condenser mics, seamless recording of files beyond 2GB, and other enhancements.
The MicroTrack II delivers one of the highest quality mobile recording experiences available today. Simply record WAV, BWF, and MP3 files to CompactFlash or Microdrives through balanced line inputs or built-in microphone preamps-then drag and drop recordings to your computer via high-speed USB 2.0 for immediate editing or Web posting. MicroTrack II is perfect for a wide variety of applications including field recording, capturing live shows, songwriting, education, and more.

I use this recorder in conjunction with my apogeee mini-me (A/D conversion; pre-amp) via the S/PDIF digi in. For mics I have a pair of schoeps so sound quality is optimal. The 24-bit recording is as full as any other unit 10 x's the price. I have not tried direct plug in from other sources or mics. The battery thing is an issue and I do not like having to power up via usb. for $20 a battery pack is the way to go.
After a year's use there has been no tech problems or issues.

Perfect! Just enough!

I gave this item a 5 on features not because it has so many, but because it has JUST enough. So many digital recorders try to do everything, and the result is a very steep learning curve, and a huge manual. If you want to record rehearsals, or gigs, with no hassle, then this gem is the real deal.

If it weren't for the noise...

This would be a great little recording device. All the connectivity and features are fabulous, but I just cannot abide the amount of noise the MicroTrack inserts into my recordings (this applies to use with external condenser mics as well). I'm sure it might be great for some applications, but if you have visions of recording studio-quality Music, I would strongly suggest looking elsewhere. Built-in mics would have been nice, too - having to plug things in makes the device less portable and slower to deploy.

ultimately a let-down

Reviewer's Play Style: I collect everyday sounds
Like the previous reviewer, I've had definite noise issues, mostly recording anything via a microphone. Lining-in off the TV or radio for example is problem-free, but try and record any gentle acoustic music, or everyday ambient sounds for example, and although the sound is clear and bright, the noise behind that is a real let down. I was hoping this would be the replacement for MD I needed, but it's not to be. I described this all to m-audio support form but didn't hear back.

If only it worked right

This product looks great on paper but it is very noisy using the 1/4" inputs and it has drop outs when recording in MP3 mode. After an entire year trying to get this problem resolved, M-Audio says they will not be fixing the MP3 drop out problem. Save yourself the pain and go with a company that actually supports their products.
