M-Audio Nova

After redaing a review of this mic in one of my recording magazines, I actually came across the Nova at a music re-sale shop. I picked it up the next day and have been amazed at the quality it gives to recordings. I've tried it on vocals, acoustic, drum overheads, room mic, and electric guitar. Perfectly suited for all of the above except the guitar cab, but what should I expect with a low SPL(128).

This mic is heavier than it looks, just another nod to the quality of this mic. I couldn't give the Nova a high rating on features simply because it's limited in use due to the low SPL. A pad switch would be a great addition/upgrade. (hint, hint)

Otherwise this mic is a great addition to any project studio.

I bought this mic. for strings, and when recording drums I have it set in the back of the studio for rad layered effects that makes the final mix a little more full and bright! If it's a sweet vocal mic you are looking for, I suggest the SHURE SM7B! it's a little more expensive, but this mic is SICK! The quality and tone is totally unbeatable, even when compared to thousand dollar condeser mics! All things considered, the NOVA is a good mic for certain applications, and for the price, but don't expect great things from it... you get what you pay for!

I think this is a great microphone overall! I read a lot of reviews on, and alot were about its abilities on miking guitars. I wanted to know how it was on vocals personally. Well, when I got it all hooked up, and tested it, I decided to mic up and record my Martin Sigma Guitar myself. Turns out I see why people say this is so great for recording guitar! But aside from all that, this things is absolutely amazing for vocals!!! Very full and picks up exactly what it hears, point blank! Great value, I dont know how M-Audio does it, but I'm lovin every bit of it! If you're looking for a god condenser mic as a first, or just in general: This will be your first, and last needed, until maybe one day you want to go with a Neuman... But the Nova is my personal favorite, perfect 10 from me!!!

I have had this mike for more than a year now and am totally blown away by it. I also have a pair of Rode NT mics and an Audio Technica 4035. This Nova works just as well as either of them. I have used it on acoustic guitars as well as vocals. While I still enjoy the Rode mics for vocals I would tell anybody else to buy this Nova, take the difference and buy a nice tube pre-amp to go with this mic and you'll be amazed at how good this M-Audio Nova sounds.

I bought this microphone about 1.5 years ago after not being very happy with the accurate but plain sound of my AKG C3000B pair. I'm using it to record a small 5'7 acoustic grand piano. The sound is pretty good overall.

Last week I finally bought enough mic cables to record all 5 mics I own at once - 4 inside the piano with the lid open : 2 AKG C3000B, MXL 990, Nova; and one below - MXL 991, on a desktop-type stand extended, nearly touching the soundboard. I recorded with a Roland VS2400CD. All 5 mic pres were set to the same level. During playback I found that the track with the Nova track was the only one with a few unexplained clipping peaks, in places that didn't belong. The rest of the Nova track recording was pretty much at the same level as all the other mikes. I guess the Nova is a little oversensitive compared to the other mikes I own. I will experiment some more and reduce mic pre level, but I may stop using this mike because of this issue. The MXL 990 is a little better IMO.
