Model 01, Deanna

The MXL 3000 has a large gold-sputtered diaphragm and an FET preamplifier with premium components within the signal path. Its transformer-coupled output is very reminiscent of the circuit designs found in early British recording consoles. When used for recording vocals the microphone has amazing clarity and warmth. It is a stunningly detailed microphone that is also appropriate for instrument miking, especially of string and wind instruments. It comes in a rugged aluminum flight case and includes microphone mount. Requires phantom power.

If you have a choice between this and the MXL 990/991 package: pick this. The 900 series of MXL is garbage, meant to be marketing giveaways to promote a new name in a sea flooded with brands.

Now to the mic:

I've had the privilege of working with much better mics and mic pres in several studios (i.e., Neumann u87 through an MSS-10...mmmmm), but most of the time I'm on my home rig. This mic is GREAT for the money. Pretty detailed sound/response, and despite the spec sheet's response curve it's not overly bright. Simply lovely for acoustic guitar, worked better than my AKG 451s for warm, solo-guitar work. Dinged quality for not including a shockmount. Wish I had upped for the 4000, as I would have like a few more patterns to work with.

I got a pair of these after trying some out with another local bluegrass band. I noticed they were especially easy to use for one or 2 mic live traditional setups. From out front all the instruments came thru rich and true with full spectrum from the bass of the guitar to the mando chop. The musicians can stand a comfortable distance away, almost 90 deg. off axis and still sound great. The 3000 brings out a low mid and downplays a nasally high mid that makes my voice sound really great live. I found myself singing differently because I hear more of what sounds like my real voice coming thru via the mic. One caution: if you're using squawky 10" or 12" 2 way PA speakers, this mic will be extremely mid-heavy and may need some scooped EQ.

It is notably smoother on the very high end than my Behringer B1 and MXL V63 and darker than both those mics, with less "air". The 3000 was more present in the mids and brought recorded vocals way out in front of the mix. It gave me a harmonically full and warm vintage mono drum overhead sound without brittle hats/cymbals:. I got a good distance mic'd guitar amp and bass amp, but not turned up loud. Lots of uses. Fits in shockmounts from Behringer and MXL, but doesn't come with one. Has a nice flite case.

Great Mic

I just bought this mic and and very impressed with its vocal quality, especially in the warmth department. I previously used an AKG Perception 100 which had a very airy, thin sound...I had to do A LOT of eq'ing to bring my vocals to life. This mic required me to do nothing that extensive. A little manipulation for vocal clarity and the cutting out of the low frequency for the mic rumbe (don't have a shock mount) and thats it. The mic picks up a nice, warm sound. My only complaint would be the harsh frequency response around the 8-10K region, where I do have to eq to calm that down. I use this mic now with the antares mic modeler and it sounds great (model after neumann u87). Would recommend to anyone for the price!

Very even tempered mic

This mic is a nice combination of full sound with excellent detail. I wouldn't call it "stunning detail" but definately has better than average transient response. The frequency response is very smooth without any particular frequencies jumping out from the rest in need of EQ. It makes this mic usable for a wide field of applications. I've had great results with vocals and the smoothness would lend itself well to sax and strings. The lack of rolloff or hi pass doesn't matter to me as I feel that's better handled at the mic pre.
