I don't fully understand condensor mics, but what i can say is that this mic is AMAZING. I also have the 992, and in comparison, the 990 doesn't seem to be as sensitive on the high end. But for general, overall, recording jobs, you cant go wrong with the 990!

I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, but this mike works very well with transmitting equipment. For the price, it cannot be beat. I've owned it for more than two years now and it is still sounding wonderful. It may be an odd application for this mike, but it works very nicely.

Obviously this microphone is not meant to compete with Blue or Neumann...that is just its nature. I received this microphone for free a long time ago with a previous order and decided to finally use it in the studio. I put it in front of my guitar cab and with very little effort at all had a better sound than an SM57. I have not used it for any vocals or anything else, but the clear and full sound you can get from this microphone for less money than the SM57 makes it a screaming buy for me.

This mic is fantastic! I bought it as my first real studio mic and I love it! The sound is very crisp and clear. I use it for recording guitar and vocals as well as for soundtracks for short animated films. The shock mount is ok but you have to really crank on the knob to get it to stay up. Overall this mic is one of the best in this price range.

I purchased two of these in 2008 for home studio usage and have not been disappointed in the slightest. One of them was just opened the other day as I've only ever needed one at a time until then. The quality of my vocal and acoustic guitar recordings have went through the roof. Even used them as room mics to capture the essence of a large amp while simultaneously close micing. I warm up the mic with a tube pre-amp before it goes to my board, but that's something I do anyway. Sure it's not a high end mic but my bro in law who has a larger home studio and doesn't skimp on equipment was blown away by the sound of my recordings. He couldn't get over the clarity of these MXLs. While I can hear the difference between the high end mics and the MXL, most people can't - but I knocked off a half point here and there just to be a little more realistic. I found the dynamic range to be almost perfect and run my board flat without having to increase mid or low range. The sensitivity is insane. You will want your immediate vicinity to be completely hush hush before recording. I have not used them live due to this reason but maybe one day I will attempt it. I have recorded up to 6 voices singing around 1 MXL in a semi circle in my studio and this little dynamo took everything we threw at it and more. It does require phantom power - but take my advice and add a Tube pre-amp with phantom power to your cart. They aren't expensive and together with the MXL will make a truly dynamic duo in your recording studio!
