I used to work in a recording studio and had access to all sorts of $3000 Neumans, AKG 414s and microphones from companies I had never heard of so I've always felt bummed out with the quality of my personal studio mics, ones that I could actually afford (SM58s, SM57s etc.) I do a great deal of electroacoustic music, processing recorded percussion improvisations then further manipulating them with my PC, but previously did a lot more processing than recording as 1) I could never get my recordings loud enough without compromising clarity and noise floor.

Judging from the price of the MXL line, I assumed I was in store for further anguish, but I decided to give this microphone a try -- and wow am I pleasantly surprised! I plugged in this mic and found that I had to turn down the gain *substantially* (I know this argument might simply be dynamic vs. condensers, but I've tried other condensers and not had the same result). I set the microphone in front of a table full of percussion, recorded for a few minutes, and could hear everything perfectly with a terrific frequency response (lows, highs and mids); I even tapped a drum stick on (unamplified) electric guitar strings and could hear it perfectly in the mix without any sort of compression or otherwise processing.

The clincher is the stereo aspect. Previously, I've had issues with recreating a suitable stereo field when using panning and two microphones. With this mic, I could walk around the microphone while striking a piece of metal and really hear a surround mix.

I am ridiculously pleased with the MXL 990 Stereo... Finally, my creativity isn't stifled by the thought of "this is interesting, but my recordings don't properly represent the performance".

Purchased the mic and almost immediately had a chance to use it in studio situation miking drum overheads and later acoustic guitar in stereo. I am very happy with the sound I was able to get from this relatively inexpensive mic! Used to have to pay really big bucks for some decent stereo mics, but no more. If you are on a budget and do not work for the likes of Criteria Studios, this one is for you. Very clean sound for overheads, acoustic instruments, and even vocals.
