This is a fairly large microphone, although not as large and heavy as the MXL 960 or the Genesis. Nonetheless, I would suggest it be mounted on a secure stand with a low center of gravity. The 992 comes supplied with a shock mount, which will also work with the MXL 990; however, the shock mount that comes with the 990 shouldn’t be used with the 992, as the width of the band on the 990 shock mount is not wide enough to properly secure the 992. It also comes with a nice case for transporting and storing the mic.

The MXL 992 comes with 10db pad for handling instruments with high SPL’s as well as a low-cut switch to mitigate proximity effect on close-in vocals.

The 992 has sonic qualities that are similar to the 990, but with a smoother midrange and a more robust bottom end. This may be due, in part, to the larger capsule of the 992. Overall, I like this microphone very much and would not hesitate to use it for any application where I would use the MXL 990. In fact, I would be more inclined to use the MXL 992 on instruments with a "thick" sound such as French horn or baritone sax.

This mic is great for the price. I use it for vocals and acoustic guitars. The only problem I have had so far with that and the pencil mic that came with it free is a bit of hiss...ESPECIALLY when you turn the volume up on it. I think that could be my mixer though, other then that it's awesome and gives incredible sound ranges.

I have been using this microphone for a while on acoustic guitars, amps, vocals, and pretty much everything else (which is pretty amazing in itself). The only problem is that if i have a real strong vocalist come in my studio, they over power this microphone by itself... yes, by itself!!! Which means you should just go ahead and buy two of them and and set one on top up-side-down and one regularly, and direct them at a forty five degree angle with each other. This creates a stereo effect and poof, it sounds great... or you can just up grade to the better, more expensive microphones!!! :P

This product is great for the price. You get what you need. My only gripe is the shock mount... it seems a little cheap and easily breakable. (So be careful) Other than that I am happy with my purchase!

Simply Amazing

Wow. Where to start. I bought this mike to record vocals, guitar, and piano. It is incredible. I have used several mikes (dynamic and condenser) to record my acoustic guitar, but none compare to the MXL 992. It is much better for guitar than the MXL 990 because it has the low frequency roll off. The MXL 990 makes the guitar sound muddy, but as soon as plug in the 992 and turn on the rolloff switch, it sounds crisp, clean and exactly how the an acoustic sounds in real life. If you take proper care of it, it will last a long time.
