The Bomb on Toms!

I got a pair of these from a friend who was short of cash. I put them on my toms, and was completely blown away. No EQ, no compression, just raw they rock. They are simply the best mics I have ever heard on my toms, and I am now buying another pair to complete the set. When will they come out with a kick drum mic. (Yes MXL, that is a hint.)

I bought this mic a few months ago, and didn't like it when I first heard it. I use it occasionally on the low tom. This mic (and other mxl mics) have this strange unnatural sounding high frequency boost (somewhere around 8-12k). It's not necessary, but I guess they add it for "brightness". Whatever, it's stupid. you shouldn't record "brightly" anyway, because you can add it in later, and it's hard to take out otherwise. It doesn't work well. Bottom line: the vast majority of the classic mics we know and love (U47, U67, U87, 241, etc.) don't have this characteristic, and the fact that brands like mxl feel the need to tweak their products in this way is silly and useless.

I purchased this little unit because I was in desperate need of a cheap condenser mic for my home studio. I've tried out other MXL mics before but none of them really suited my needs. I bought this one on a whim and have never been happier! Vocals are bright and clean and it can practically mic an entire drum kit by itself! I just recommend a brass pop filter and you'll be set!
