Very nice when they worked.

I got these mics in a package deal with some studio monitors. Out of the box they both sounded very good and I was quite pleased. 4 months later they both suddenly stopped working. I think I'll spring for a set of Shure Betas.

I bought this condenser mic. combo-set about two years ago. I had received an interface (fire-wire, from guitar/mic to computer)the previous Christmas and decided it was time for a serious equip upgrade. The problem? I was low on funds. However, per a serendipitous find at my local guitar botique, I came across this Microphone set. The salesman had me questioning my buy with percautions against cheaply priced equip. (he worked on commission) but, at the end of the day, price won over quality and I sauntered back to my recording den with the MXL 991/990 (pair) in hand.

Aside from the jaunty carrying case and foam buffers, the set was straight forward: One Uni Directional Mic, One Choir Mic (cables sold separately). I opened, plugged(P48 req.), and tested. The microphones were great! The lows were fat and highs were crystal clear. The 990 is great for vocals and the 991 is great for instruments. Both mics. have dynamic properties and are great for either @ home or in-studio I bought this condenser mic. combo-set about two years ago. 990 fantastic. 991 is sensitive.

I love these mics. I use 2 990's for vocal recording to get an off-phase sound. I would say, in this price range, I haven't found a mic I like better.

I haven't had the opportunity to test out the 991 extensively but it is not for vocals. It's very sensitive and I will be testing it out in the coming days.

First Studio Must Have!

I got these mic's when I started my studio along with a cheap Tascam interface. These are an amazing deal! I recently recorded an acoustic project and these were the only mic's I needed to get a pro sounding recording of the guitar and vocals. I plan on upgrading them in the future but will keep them as backups since I'm sure I will always have a use for them. The clip for the 990 isn't the best and its ideal to have a shock mount but you can get away without it in my opinion.

After using evryone else's studio, it was time to build my own...my choice for mics started with these just to have a good enough microphones. They are way better than I thought, in fact the sound better than a lot of my buddies "namebrand top-of-the-line mics". Just buy them, they are worth it...get a shock mount though...for 20 bucks its a no brainer..For mics as smooth as silk? Heck yeah!
