Looks aren't everything

I took a chance on this mic when I saw how many 5 star reviews there were. My loss but it wasn't an expensive gamble. Yes, for the price you get a lot: A cool looking mic, a nice cable and a sturdy case. But what's a mic for? Looks or sound? I tested the mic on three 6-string guitars, various vocals, light percussion and acoustic bass. It's just not smooth. The high end yields a distortion that is easy to hear and bothersome so don't use this mic to record female vocals or male vocals in the Sting range. It did, however, sound much better in the lower mid range. Bass was dim and lacked any depth no matter how I placed the mic. It does look cool but the solid brace conducts sound right through it; even floor vibrations from outside the booth could be heard like a heart beat. For those on a budget, and looking for a starter mic to get down some ideas... it's a nice package. For those looking for smooth pro-quality sound, you can spend a little more on an Audio Technica AT series mic and be in a completely different world. For just a bit more money (IE: AT 2035) you'll hear a big difference.

Great for Radio Theater
Posted by Rick H from Kenosha WI on Feb 15, 2010
Experience w/product: I own it
Reviewer's Background: Sound Engineer for stage and radio
Reviewer's Play Style: Old Time Radio
I purchased this microphone for radio theater production rehearsals. My primary purpose was to limit the use of my fragile vintage ribbon mics to just the stage presentations. Upon using the MXL V900, I was amazed at the performance and quality of this microphone. I did some side by side comparisons with my Audio Technica 4050, Rode NT1, and Studio Projects C1 microphones. I did the same with my Ribbon mics, RCA 77D, Altec 671 and RCA SK50. Every mic has it's own character so none are clones, but The V900 ranks with the best of them. It is now one of my favorites. It looks great on stage too. If you do any period presentations, I highly recommend this mic. I believe if this mic were made in the US or Germany 50 years ago, It would be a coveted classic today. At the price, You can't go wrong. It may yet become that classic.

Great Overhead Mic for Drums
Posted by DaRangers from Cincinnati, Ohio on Jul 17, 2009
Experience w/product: I own it
Reviewer's Background: Activer Drummer / Percussionist

I recently played at a local festival where the sound crew ran the MXL V900 as an overhead mic for the drums along with a kick mic. The sound was really quite remarkable. Cymbals and hi-hats were crisp; the snare and rack toms were well defined with clear voices. I now own this mic. The V900's beefy construction seems well-suited for gigging and life on the stage. And, mine always seems to garner favorable reviews from other drummers and soundtechs. It's an exception mic for an exceptional value!

Great instrument Mic!

I've been using two of these in live settings / on stage for Saxophone and acoustic Upright Bass (right above the f-hole) and they are killer! Also good for recording all instruments, including drums, the only thing I don't like it on is vocals (it's kinda thin) but on everything else it has that warm sound like a ribbon mic.

Great value in this package
Posted by Harpoon Man from Texas Gulf Coast on Apr 10, 2009

Reviewer's Background: Active Musician- Rock, Country
Reviewer's Play Style: mostly Country Gospel with this mic
I like to play acoustic style harmonica at certian times. This mic allows me to get the hand articulation and voice playing this way. I can get 10 inches back from it and it still picks up every tone in a rich smooth fashion keeping a good volume with out feed back. Placement on stage needs to be taken into account so don't play in front of the drums or a monitor thats right behind you. I can't use it in a small practice room with a lot of other instruments blasting away but on satge it works for me or in a studio setting it really shines. For the price of the package you can't go wrong, carry case, XLR cable and pop filter.
