Like the full bass to high frequency range. Placement and surface are critical. Not for close up work. Love the auto on & off feature. Don't like the back end, hooking up cables a bit of a hassle. Impedance knob hard to see. Black coating on speaker cabinet shrunk on me when I set speakers in sun for just a few minutes. My mistake. Can turn way up without distortion. Kinda dull looking, hoping to try them out on my large Sony 46" Hi Def lcd tv connected to Mac & Logic, set up for stereo speaker add on to tv speakers. Have other monitors in studio I like better. (Peavey PMR 312 kick ass Monitors) Use Blue Sky EXO 2.1 for small system quick check of mix.

I really want to buy these. ALOT. My tenor sax teacher Craig Christman has them, and they sound phenomenal. This is a steal deal. I'd rather get the mk2 because they are much better as to what I hear, but, these are good enough if you put some isolation pads under them. I love these. And to the guy under me, I understand what you're saying, but, why not do most of your mixing with these, and then do final stuff with Anvantone Mix Cubes or something?

There is a difference between budget audio, and real pro audio. Mackies give u pro audio, are packed with value and controls to blend in any room or studio. Its all in the sound. Music has never sounded this good, reproduction is astonishing. I started with speakers in the 500 range (for a pair) they just arent comparable. I won't even get into particulars because its not even worth it. Spend the money, your ears and music will be thankfull. The quality of your productions will skyrocket.

Great for production, bad for mastering.

Clean and transparent. Best way to describe their sound. Though the bass output is a bit "boomy". You can boost the bass output or select from three cutoff frequencies to help get them settled in the studio. What's great about these guys is the sound, completely transparent. Definitely the kind of monitor you can listen to for 10 hours and not get an ear bleed. Did I mention that these things PUMP. I really mean that, they are the low end of the "real deal". They are built rock solid and can take a beating. I would recommend these for production and mixing work. Certainly not mastering :)

I'd rather use cheap stereo speakers

I've actually had a lot of experience with these speakers. I'm a pro audio engineer, and have had albums on the billboard charts. To me these monitors are just not that good at all. The difference between what you hear and what you get in your car speakers is huge. Of course you can train your hearing to allow for that but whats the point. These speakers do sound great but they do not translate well at all. The only time I would use these was for playback for the bands. When it came down to mixing the album the first thing I would do is shut these things off and bring in some cheap stereo speakers we had in our studio office and hook those up. Thats what I would rather mix through because most people will be listening to your album through cheap speakers and not through $1,000 studio monitors. You would be surprised how many grammy winning engineers mix through really cheap, crappy speakers. Some that I know actually hook up a tv that has stereo sound and mix through that. So why pay all this money for monitors that translate like junk when 95% of people will be listening through standard speakers anyway. The only real requirement I look for is that the monitors can produce between 50hz - 20k.
